Just bought drag car chopped, lowered nos at Sherrif's sale. Engine number is 5550 or M5550. I have no idea what I have here. Dual carbs 4 Nos and 4 fuel injectors, NOS tank, fuel pump system, all electronic, 40K V , very expensive brakes, shifter brake lock, huge tach, roll bar, racing wheel and seat witrh 4 point harness......crazy car...was left outside so all in less than nice shape, engine frozen so are carbs but intakes were sealed, but all there! Problem is the engine.....what is it? 5550 or M5550 is the number. Is it custom, Porsche, I have no idea...oh no squirl cage or generator, two electic fans ran on battery. Can post pix if anyone is interested in seeing it!

My son and I are into a 63 rebuild of a bug, but are interrupting to decide what to do with this crazy car we now own...oh we have a title, but as it sits this is far from street legal. need engine help

That number doesn't mean anything to me. You should be able to tell fairly easily if the engine is based on a Type 1 case (magnesium alloy) or a Type 4/914 case (aluminum alloy) just by looking at its shape.

Type 1 looks like this with serial number stamped on flange of front of the generator stand base. The exhaust ports are on front and rear of heads.

Type 4 looks like this. Numbers are on top of case to left of the breather. It also has a a screw on oil filter on bottom of the engine and the exhaust ports are on the bottom of the heads.
