my 54 rag here in Australia. everyone I talked to lately said skirts can't be done on long axle..... I am sure lots of people run short axles with spacers to fit aftermarket wheels, I did mine a little different......
rear spats (called skirts in usa?) on a long axle 68 box.
I went from 4 stud to wide 5 with a very good spacer kit from "buty's bits" in the uk. just take off the 4 stud rear drums, put on the inner thin spacer, slide on the stock 64 drums and add the outer spacer. took 10mins to go to wide 5 with advantages of wide track, syncro box, and 68 brakes. maybe not the best way to do it but works for me, just fine.
next the skirts, roll the inner lower lip in the tyre radius area only, bend and shape the support bar to follow the curve of the spat. got em on with 5mm clearance, damn close but also works for me, just fine.
next will be lowering to see if enough neg camber to get 17 radars on, offset?

maybe people don't like the look of wide track skinnys but I do. that's all that matters and we are all different but love our vws. this way, I get long axle late gearbox, stock skinny wheels, wide track, and skirts, all with very minimal work. I put a photo in the gallery, not bad for an old guy.....
