|
|
So, welding the new accelerator bracket onto my new green floor. The little "L" Spring that retains the pivot shaft is a pain. Once it's in place the installation of the pedal itself makes it tough to insert the pivot pin. Any tricks to holding it back while the pin and pedal are in place? |

I did this recently, it was a pain, probably because I had never done it before.
I inserted the pin to get it started, from the right side if I remember right, then I used a small screwdriver to hold the L spring back while sliding the pin through.
It took some trickery and might have been easier with 3 hands but I got it done.
This was not on a green floor but I had replaced the floor mount with a new Wolfsburg West floor mount. _________________ How to Post Photos

i addition to the petal return spring you can also backdate to the old style spring and sleeve and loose the spring that mounts on the carb itself
your petal will "feel" better and the carb throttle shaft will not wear as fast _________________ WANTED:

Yep...all WW parts. I thought about the tiny screwdriver approach or maybe something to pull back the spring with...a strap of some sort. Thought maybe somebody had some "magic" trick that was easier. It's such a PIA, I actually considered assembling the whole thing BEFORE welding it in, but that could lead to other issues. |

You guys are weird, I don't know what you're whining about. The spring clip slides in, then you install the pedal and slip the pin in while holding the clip with your finger. It snaps into place in the groove. Then you install the lower linkage and the rod that goes from top to bottom. What's the big deal? The pedal hinges straight up so you have tons of access. |

That's what I thought until I attempted it. Ever done it? "Hold the clip with your finger"? No freakin' way. |

Yes, at least a half dozen times. The pedal is a 30 second install. Maybe you're installing it wrong?
Leave it to Jon to have some nice pictures in the gallery.
I usually spend more time chasing what's left of the broken leaf spring with a small modified screwdriver I use solely for that purpose than installing the whole pedal assembly and linkage. |

Nah...I know how it goes in, and preassembled it before welding in the bracket. Doing it with the bracket welded in just seems to require done extremely small hands and circus like flexibility. The spring (not really a spring at all) is super stiff and will require pretty strong force, with no room for MY hands, to hold it back far enough to slide the shaft through the bracket and pedal. |

I'm not sure what to say, keep at it I guess. I do not have small hands but I am fairly dexterous. |

I think the original VW ones were more supple if that applies to spring steel. |

Found this gem tonight. Was hoping to just replace old hinge, and bring in new pedal. But SC PO had other ideas years ago.
What I need…what is location and orientation for resetting hinge? 65 Single Cab…
Thanks everyone.

First thing would be to remove the aluminum scab off the floor and see what you have under that. _________________ In Stereo, Where Available! |
