Hey Guys,

I am looking for info about the Clipper L buses. I get all the extra chrome on bumbers, jail bars, (similar to splittie), clock, but what about the standard engine? Did they come with dual carbs stock or did they come with single carbs (or both).

Does anyone know?

Thanks!

Phil

Model year 1971 deluxe had a dual port dog house engine with a case number of AE. 34-pict-3.

Depends on where it was delivered, could have come with a 1300 as well, the M plate will be the final answer.

Hey Guys,

Here are some pictures of the engine. It starts with AS which means 1974 to 1979 Non USA engine according to the tech docs. Since this bus was imported sometime before 1979, I theorize that the original owner of swapped out the engine while it was still in Europe. Speculation...

That was built only a few days before mine. They may have shared a parking lot for a day. Maybe for an American... destined for Germany but a MPH speedo and padded dash...

You might want to have a close look at the case along the seam up front near the bellhousing for the dreaded mark of GEX, when Germany cracked down on rusty vehicles in the early 80's all the rebuilders here were bringing in cores by the container full.

Good advice, thanks busdaddy. I will comb all over the engine case and bell housing. I suspect its not a GEX but better to triple check.

question though, would that engine number be a GEX? It was made between 74 and 79 (I am sure I could find the exact year). Or in the 80s did they just box up everything they had and ship them to the USA?

Could be out of any later bus that rusted out around it, GEX and other mass rebuilders bought up piles of cores when germany tightened up inspections and rusty cars got sent to the crusher. You find a lot of Euro market only cases in cars that had rebuilt engines installed here in the late 80's / early 90's.

Got it..OK. Great information. I will inspected the hell out of it. I will need a mirror rag, etc to get under there and see if there is the dreaded stamp of engine death.

And check along the sides of the block for AS21 markings on the casting.

That may turn out to be a good thing to find.

Good call, if I find AS21 I have read that this is the highest quality block.

Thanks,

Below are some pictures of the Cliper-L. Cool sticker from dealer in Germany still on it. Back in 71, the dealer rust proofed the undercarriage. It is very rust free. Now I am planning what level of preservation/restoration I should do. Cool bus! Btw. Not a GEX engine.
