|
|
I have a later type 1 with a 67 short swing axle rear.
The previous owner installed a 69+ backing plate, wheels cylinders, wider type 315 40 mm wide shoes and 4 lug drums (with hub cut to fit shorter axles). But now I want to install the original 5 wide wheels.
I bought 67 drums and thought that they would fit over the wider 40 mm shoes. I thought wrongly, so bought the 270 type 30 mm shoes, and tried a trial fit. Found that they will work with the 67 drums, BUT I have IRS backing plates and wheel cylinders, so discovered that the 30 mm shoes dont fit properly on the raised pads of the backing plate (raised above it by the wheels cylinders and adjusting screws).
I am thinking that my only solution is to run 67 backing plates, wheel cylinders and adusting screws.
Does anyone have a suggestion on where to find 66-67 type 1 backing plates. I think wheels cylinders are readially available. Dont know about the adjusting screws.
Any help would be greatly appreciated.
Thanks, Grant |

Try the classifieds on this site, its very good. ...You can also check out the vendors in the "community" section under Business _________________ May God have mercy upon my enemies, because I won't.

You think right. Except for the adjusters, those should be the same from 65 onward (the angled ones)
Best bet - Samba Classifieds or eBay for good-used parts. The early 60s backing plates are similar - as long as you drill the hole out for the weep hole of the bearing cap those will work too.
Another option, not sure if you thought about it or not, is to use keep your wider rear brake parts and run 181601615 drums from an IRS 73-74 Thing. I think this pushes the rear track outward a little bit though.

I'm running into a similar situation trying to find backing plates. Are you sure early 60s backing plates will work with a 67? I have a ton of parts that I thought would fit but didn't for some unforeseen reason. Hate to add to that pile.
Thanks! |
