|
|
I recently bought a new van, which has a birth certificate from the VW museum saying it was built on the 24th May 1957. It has semaphores, but looking at the front panel inside the cab, I can see three tiny holes that have been welded over where indicators would have been.
I know VW started phasing out semaphores in '56, and imagine that mine may still be '56 model, but why would it have front indicators and semaphores?
Is this possible? Thanks! |

You could be thinking of North American Buses, which got front bullet blinkers in early 1955. |
That's probably it. I had a '59 beetle with semaphores so knew that they still used in Europe at that time. Just didn't know if the SA market differed at all. Obviously not.
Just to clarify, any indicators/blinkers fitted at this time would be aftermarket ones by the owners, etc, not at the factory?
Thanks for the replies! |

I would say yes, although it could also be from a company that offered this service. At some point later** many European countries required "regular" turn signals front and rear for safety reasons. So there were lots of kits and hacks out there to add signals.
** I can't recall the exact year, maybe a European or other member can chime in _________________ How to Post Photos
