hey everybody,

the thing has been making a weird grinding noise from the right rear. i thought it was a bearing, but when i looked under the car i saw some fluid coming out from between the axle and the transmission. you can see that the fluid is being sprayed on the starter and the surrounding areas.

it's still juicy from what you can see in the pic. i know there are seals between the transmission and the axle...i just have no idea what they are called Embarassed Embarassed Embarassed

is this a simple fix? and is there a kit for this?

How about the output flange/shaft seal.

Don't know what is written up about changing these seals in the Thing forum but there are lots of post in the late Bug forum, the Bay Window forum, and the Vanagon forum.

yes thank you! i saw your reply this morning and went into action. i went to the local vw place and bought the seals. first seals i bought were incorrect (way too thick). the next seals a bought were correct (i think).

i then proceeded to bend both of the trying to get them pressed in. i tried using a 36mm socket which proved too be to small. and of course, they were the last ones that the parts store had Sad

i bought a piece of pvc that is the correct size but now i have to order the seals from cip1.

its been a long day...

Cock the seal in at an angle so that one side is about 1/2 way in and the other out just a bit. Now use a drift and a hammer at a 45° angle to the seal to beat the high side in. Takes some practice, but will work with most any large diameter seal.

The wide seal is an upgrade from the narrow one, it is correct. The original seals are narrow and still available. however the wide one is prefered due to the fact that it will stop against the bearing and the narrow one will not.

oops...well i'll know for next time. i just couldn't get the flange in deep enough to install the clip. i felt like a beat the flange to death and i didn't want to screw something up. i guess i played it too safe.

thanks for everything guys. hopefully i can get the stupid thing in with a pvc pipe.

wildthings: i'll try that out

Thread a 10mm stud into the out shaft of trans(engine mounting studs work great) then use a socket and 10mm nut to push the seal into place, no hammering involved

also use mcmscotts way to install the snap ring after you get the seal in just put the snap ring on use the stud and a socket to install the snap ring. and yes that is one way we installed the seal at the dealer.

Is that a 46mm socket?

I think I have a 43mm that'll work.

I believe it is, it measures 2.437 od. It will stop at the lip in the side cover so as not to push the seal in to far

i can't thank you enough, mcmscott! once i got all the stuff together, it took me 5 minutes to get the seal and flange in place. the hardest part was getting that lock ring in (nearly took my eye out a couple of times).

went to the local hardware store and picked up a long piece of 10m 1.5. here are the pics. hopefully this helps someone in the future!
