Well, the obvious one is "red for hot and blue for cold", although my van shouldn't even have the red dot...Smile When I pull the top lever all the way right (the 'up' arrow) I get air on the front defroster. Aside from that, i'm in the same boat as you. C'mon folks, help us out!

I've read my manual a few times and have come to the conclusion that I don't have enough higher education to ever totally unmask the mystery of the vanagon heating-cooling system. I do know this. Lever a, b, d to the right and c to the left makes thing warm, and the opposite makes things cold. Mine is an 85 so it might be a little different, but the controls look the same. I finally had to just play with it. It also seems that the upper 2 levers control the front vents and heat and the bottom levers control the back. Could be wrong though. Smile

Ragman, you have warmed my soul and my frozen fingers with your generosity Smile I finally understand how to get that friggin' thing to warm up. And just in time for the first snowfall, too... I hope my gas heater works the way it's supposed to. I've been afraid to try it for extended periods.

nybeat84 - congrats on the new van. like the rest of the vw line, they're addictive.

ragman - thanks a million. we usually get heat by random chance. and then it often blows too hot, who'da thunk that would be a problem.
