So the online auction website was playing up and I entered a bid for an orange Beetle. I bid low enough that I thought I wouldn't win but later that day got an email saying I was the winning bidder Shocked . I went to pick it up and I haven't stopped smiling since! It's a real Frankenbeetle and it has a lot of issues. I'm only going to drive it in the summer and will keep it in the garage. I'm willing to bet it will leak like a sieve in the rain and I haven't been brave enough to look at how bad the rust is underneath. But, it's mine and it makes me smile, hopefully it won't empty my bank account.

Thanks, planning to check the brakes this weekend, any tips for checking fuel lines? Quite a strong smell of fuel in the car when driving.

I've never seen that rack before. My plan was to remove it but it's grown on me and I quite like it now, it'll be staying on for a while. I think it's made by a company called Flat4.

Before you drive it another mile, replace ALL your fuel lines:under the tank, next to the transaxle, in the engine bay..also check in the frunk for leaks at the gas gauge sender and the fill and vent hoses.

Shocked Shocked Shocked
The big pipe from the filler neck to the tank seems "sweaty", do I need to worry about that?

Cool little car you got there, congrats. The mismatched tail, headlight and bumpers would drive me nuts but otherwise I'd drive it no problem (after replacing the brake and fuel lines as said above.)

Nice, those late slotted wheels actually look good in two-tone, and it has a solid stance. I really like the lates with metal dashes. I'm curious if the European 1300s came with the earlier taillights or if somebody swapped them for earliers.

And I never realized that Euro Beetles in the UK had speedos in MPH, I would've thought Km/h.

Fairly confidant the earlier tail lights have been swapped. Headlights and bumpers appear correct

I don't think it is. It is a bit of a Frankenbeetle so not all the parts belong together from factory. It was registered in 1971 but has had a lot of work done over the years. It originally left the factory with a 1200 engine which was replaced with a 1300tp along the way.

YES!! Like said, don't even start it, let alone drive it before replacing ALL the fuel lines. People think VWs are more prone to burning to the ground and they can, simply from lack of simple maintenance. if maintained correctly, they don't catch fire more than any other car

Looks like you can fit a whole sheet of 8x4 ply on the roof of your bug.
That's 2.44x1.22m in metric Laughing

Nice, I've got a right hand drive 1300 from 1971, looks a similar colour although mine is poppy red.

Enjoy.
