What are the general thoughts about the richmond 4.86 ring and pinion for type 1 transmissions?
I realize that the pinion is tiny, and in theory are weaker than say the 4.12...but how do they actually hold up in the real world? _________________ 1800 Type 4 Berrien 295

In a sand or dirt car they work OK. They are not for street or drags. The teeth will strip off the gears. They are not strong enough for hard starts. |

Drag racers in classes running smaller motors who used them would have to replace them after so many runs, otherwise a r&p exploding will destroy the housing. If you were using it, regular replacement was considered part of the price of going fast. To quote your post- "the pinion is tiny, and in theory are weaker...". At one time I was contemplating running one in my street car and the advice I got was to "set it up as deep as you can".
And if you can break it on the street it won't last any longer off the road...Al _________________ On a lifelong mission to prove (much to my wife's dismay) that Immaturity is Forever!! |

So the next best thing short of converting to a bus transmission would be to run a 4.375 Ring and pinion?
I have a late AH bug transmission. That meas that 4th is splined, right?
Are the 4.375's 4th gears keyed on? _________________ 1800 Type 4 Berrien 295

I am in my fifth year of running my richmond 4.86 rp....
Street only buggy with medium power engine.
No problems at all so far and it has seen its share of rough use.
My tires are 29 " diameter so it sure make the buggy very drivable on the street... Turns can be made in second gear with plenty of rpms to pull yourself out of the curve. 4th gear is perfect for freeway use.
I would do it again for street use.
Probably not good for drag race/slicks type of load.
My tires are big but they spin freely on application of power and clutch, so I really don't worry about breaking it with that happening.
And naturally, you always want to load up your drive train a bit with a little clutch applied initially and don't just bang out the clutch and slam your tranny...with any rp....
I also believe in using a "shock" engineered tranny oil like redline light shock.
Very happy with my redline shock oil and richmond 4:86 combo. |
