Getting ready for another round of work on the '71 bus and I will need some new parts. I know there is a lot of cheap/junk parts out there and I'd just as soon get the best brand/quality that I can find. So....

Is there a preferred brand of radio antenna for the bus?

I also need the rear side markers. Mine are disintegrating. I have seen many of these online for cheap but are they any good? Where should I be shopping for the good stuff"?

Thanks!

I got this one from of all places CIP (yeah..I know, remarkable), great quality and fit, but if you've got one those Dodge van antennas I can't help you.

That's the correct one. I would not have thought of buying it from that outfit though. Thanks!

They have the same side markers that I've seen everywhere Are they any good?

I haven't seen them up close lately so I don't know if they are still the crappy made in India ones with the rough edges or something better, maybe someone else has bought some recently.

I have a ~20" flexible spirally-wound antenna on my old POS Vanagon. Works well and is hard to damage. Have no idea of the brand, but would try and find another one if and when this one dies.

the new antennas rattle. They don't make them like they used to.

NOS Hella side markers are like almost unobtainium. The originlas, especially the bases, are better made than the ones from India and China. The rubber often falls apart in the package. Look for a good used pair and re-spray the silver color on the base before you install them.

An classic Hirschmann is a good choice. But pay attention - there are 3 versions today available
a) very cheap ones with simple black plastic foot
b) cheap ones with simple chrom foot
c) rare classic with chrom foot and Hirschmann label like in the following photo
d) some other rare classic variations (e.g. with red pin) typical not used for the bus.

There was a template floating around here...
It had the curve of the windscreen bottom drivers corner and indexing marks for the antenna.
Anyone seen it?

My antenna looks different than the one I am seeing available. Mine is like this

-the plastic one. Some seem to be metal

Mine is out right now as I'm redoing the front a bit. The antenna rattles a lot and it is flimsy and bent inward at the base. I'd like to replace it (even though I don't have a radio). It doesn't seem like the metal antenna part comes out from the plastic base? Do you have to get the metal one somewhere and then buy the antenna part like busdaddy's link?

There is another one with a diamond shaped mounting head, it has an adjustment to lean the antenna back or forward for the curve of the nose of the bus. I have not looked recently but they are around new.

I've seen old ones but none for sale new anywhere lately, that doesn't mean they don't exist.
That adjustable one is neat Red, haven't seen that before.
I also had a singlecab with a Hirschmann similar to the single mount style but with a long solid whip and a small black plastic holder for the whip part way up the windshield post.

I saw those. I think they are made by Ward, who also makes normal 'non-coffin' looking ones. That is the 'flex-angle' antenna.

I drilled a hole and this extended oval with a file...
position and details see my posted pdf above.

BTW: The antenna on the driver side is less risk from bushes and trees on the roadside Wink

I'd like to see some good dual-mount antennas. Mine got bumped into and busted the base.

I didn't see one for sale on the posted CIP site.

The late model single mount is meant to snap if something comes in contact with it rather than damage the body.
Look at most antennas, there a perforation scored into the bottom of the mast by the base.

On another note, I like the idea of using a cowl mounted antenna, or the "beetle style" as so many people equate it. I regularly snap antennas inadvertently either while washing the bus, gets caught up while camping etc.
I have seen power-cowl style antennas that could do well for saving me some aggrivation!
