I am shopping for a BOSCH VJU4BR8 distributor for my 59 engine. Is there any way to see if the vacuum canister is working? I plan on refurbishing the unit but would like to start with a functioning advance unit since they are so expensive new.
Thanks
Bruce

Sure, buy a vac tester pump with gauge, start er up and find out. Whats the spec?? Somebody posted a huge number of advance charts just a few days ago so the specs may be right here!

Short of buying a vacuum unit I am looking for some kind of static test, something that can see if the vacuum advance works while not on the engine.
Thanks
Bruce

You can pump it and watch the plate move, and see if it leaks down again. the vac pump is a bit pricy for one use.......maybe a big syringe?

too high tech?

Suck on it........ and sick your tongue on the barb and see if it holds vac Wink that's the industry standard

I have a restored one with a NOS vacuum canister available. If interested, email me.

I bought a vacuum pump for this exact purpose, works great. I bought it from the local auto parts store, the summit link is for example.

If you just want to know if the vacuum can is working suck on the tube and you will see it move.
