Van doesn't want to start after getting up to normal temp. Will start cold every time. Replaced fuel pressure regulator and coil. No change. Will start if I let starter go a while, engine speeds up and finally sputters to start and then lets out a squeal like a tight engine belt. Any thoughts?
Thanks, |

1. clean the grounds
2. replace the temp II sensor
3. install the hot crank relay from Jay & clean all the existing connections carefully when you do it _________________ 1986 2.1L Westy 2wd Auto Trans. |

I've sure been there!
Replaced my starter and still had the same issue. Replaced that rebuilt under warranty with yet another and added another ground cable to the frame from the mounting bolt. Don't know which one of those actually fixed the problem!
Van-Cafe sells a new starter to alternator cable (2 different sixe ends crimped on a 12 gauge ) that bolts on top of the existing one. Supposed to help.
Personally, I think your starter armature is dragging when things get toasty. Or, maybe just the pilot bearing is worn....nah.
Good luck. |

The squeal is from a LOOSE drive belt, not a tight one. It might explain your lack of starting if its the alternator belt! _________________ '84 Vanagon GL 1.9 WBX

Wouldn't a loose belt squeal every time I start it as opposed to only when it finally starts when it is hot? |

It squeals when there is enough resistance ie you've run the battery down spinning the starter with no result. _________________ '84 Vanagon GL 1.9 WBX
