someday in the near future i will be ordering seat covers. the rear seat back in the early buses was a fixed backrest.
i put this one in my 70. i like the idea of the flip down backrest
i see when i was looking at seat covers that the range is from 68 to 73 and 74 to 79
am i to assume i have the later 74-79 rear seat? other than the hinge assembly, whats the difference? they seem to be priced the same, just different p/n's _________________

It appears you've already figured out the hinge mount locations and strikers, the only other real difference is the pattern on the vinyl, squareweave opposed to basketweave and a different heatseam layout, the front cushions have a slightly different shape but the rears all look the same and AFAIK the covers interchange with little issues. The rug on the back attaches differently on the later seats as well. _________________ Rust NEVER sleeps and stock never goes out of style.

So it's safe to say I could just order the covers for a 70 then, correct? The 70 seat is just vinyl on the back where the late seat has a fuzzy back with a flap that would attach to the rear cargo area.
I am not worried about having the flap _________________

Yes, it may require a little fiddling around the latches but the overall shape is the same. _________________ Rust NEVER sleeps and stock never goes out of style.

Lining up the non fold down back rest vs the folding one the shape/ size was the same. I'll run with it. What could possibly go wrong? _________________

it all went wrong
order the cover to match the backrest...the early bay rear seat back is a bit thinner and uses a tube frame where the late seat is a boxed frame an a bit wider.
trying to side the seat cover on is like putting a condom on a elephant... _________________

When did the change in pattern take place? I am spec'ing out a full set of upholstery for a 9-seat Transporter (the Wild Westerner) and would like to get it period correct. For 1973, would that have been square weave or basket weave?

I'd like to learn from your mistake. The rear seat I found for the '73 transporter is from a later bus, but it seems to fit in just fine, with the side posts at the top of the back, and the hinged brackets that bolt to the wheel wells. I will be upholstering this, too, to match the other seats. Should I order upholstery for a '76 on the rear seat, or is the upholstery the same for a '73?
What I am after is trying to determine when the changes to the rear seat were made, and what exactly I need for this '73.
It seems that TMI is the only place to sell the square weave or basket weave upholstery. But they do not sell matching headrests, which is odd. I suppose the lovely Sewfine headrest covers will match. Black is black. Or is it? _________________ John

I would think you need to order the period correct seat covers due to the headrest holes.
If you try to go with the early Bay covers, they won't have those holes. There is a whole thread TCash put out there for seats. _________________ 2001 ZO6 (450+hp)
