Hello folks,
My 65 Roadrunner at some point had a Stewart Warner gas heater installed. It's the typical kind sold by VWOA mounted in the engine compartment opposite the battery. The problem is the spare tire well was cut out and covered to make room for it. If I return the spare to its original home there will be no room for the heater.
What was the typical MO for mounting gas heaters in a walkthrough bus?

That photo looks normal for a SW heater install. Yes, the wheel well tub gets removed and blocked off.
The eberspacher heater the factory installs doesn't require removing the wheel well.
It looks like this:

Thanks Campingbox. I was wondering if an Eberspacher would be slim enough to fit.
I wonder if the heater was installed by Riviera as my bus has lived its entire life within 10 miles of the dealership. |

There was a stewart warner heater that fit under the parcel tray in the front. It looks like most of the parts of a rear mounted heater, but arranged differently to fit. Hard to tell from the pics, and I've never been able to peek under the cover at one in person.
I have a type 3 eberspacher that I am considering mounting under the bus, with a Y fitting to add hot air to the factory center tube. |

Sorry, i know I'm in the wrong forum again 😅 But speaking of heaters...does anyone know what happened to Ark Mirvis AKA "The Heaterman"?
Back in the 90s he used to come by our shop often to buy heaters and heater parts for his business.
I bought what is basically an NOS SW 6V heater from him around 2007 or so. Beautiful work. Brand new heater.
But he seems to have vanished. I wonder if he passed away. |

No he's still out there - not restoring heaters though - but trolling to see if anyone wants to buy the business he once had.
If you want a gas heater things to consider:
For one - they are a super sub group of your regular VW groups you have. People are into them but not many actually use them, restore them or even know how they work.
Old heaters are just that - old heat with no real parts source and or servicing. You get an old heater - better learn it like your learnt valve adjusting every 3k
Stewart Warner: Very cheap to get stuff for. Lots of NOS shit from complete units to parts floating around. American Made Two different applications as described above for the split window bus. Bad - no one seems to be into them. Good heaters yet for some reason not as sought after as the Eberspacher.
Ahhh, Eberspacher. Sleek cylindrical swiss watch in your engine bay. If you had this cool - "hot " accessory added to your bus in 72, it would've set you back $800-$1000. Expensive add on for sure. Very popular. All the types - B2, BN2, BN4, BA4 & BA6 can be adapted to fit somewhere somehow to a car, lorry, bus, boat, moped. Sweet add ons like clockwork timer switches, clocks with switches & 24 hr timers. Built in thermostats. Cool down timing with self shut off (stuff the SW did not have)
When putting in heat to your Split - you can go og correct early BN4 like Campingbox showed you or you can go late BN4 with better running and longevity like the thermo BN4 in the vid below. Sound like I like Eberspachers

Yeah, I've got one of his heaters so don't need another one for sure.
Ark if you read this send me an email. I don't want to buy your business, i just want to discuss this heater you sold me a # of years ago. I don't know what the hell it was originally intended for back in the day, but its surely not for my car. |

This was the SW solution. just use a different hole in the wheel to secure it to the mount.
Hit this link for more info than you need on SW heaters.
