some info on e-code headlights:

http://www.headlightservices.com/FAQs.html

I found this on a search, and did the search when I discovered that different vendors sell different 7" outer headlights for the SA Grill. GW sells the Hella Vision Plus which is apparently NOT as good as e-code headlights.

IMO, any E-code works better than DOTs. I have E-codes in all my cars.

BTW, there's a new Hella round 7" e-code "Super". See link below. It looks like the less expensive non-city light version is sold out

I'm slowly building a grill that resembles the SA grill. I sourced some ecodes from across the pond. They are fluted as well. I'm not sure the beam pattern, but they are beautiful to look at.

Here's a great site in the UK for lights. If you plan on getting a pair of lights for a US car, make sure you select LHD. Also, some Lucas lights use a specific bulb (not H4).

I plan on getting a set of 5-3/4's (4) for a different project.

http://www.holden.co.uk/displayProducts.asp?sg=1&a...its+-+7%22

RallyLights.com is also another good source

I wonder if these would work as SA inner lamps. You wold need to swap out that RHD bulb it comes with

I discovered that BD is selling the SAE M76 DOT 7" headlights with their SA Grill kit.

Anyone would be well advised to buy the Vision Plus items from GoWesty or, even better, find some e-code lamps.

These would be better than the Vision Plus:

The next step up in halogens would be Cibie, which Daniel Stern imports.

Eventually low cost high quality LED headlights should become available, but the self-leveling requirement may mean they will never fit in the Vanagon headlight bay.

You can get Cibie headlights from amazon for a lot less than Daniel Stern.

I looked on Amazon and it wasn't clear exactly what the cibie headlights really were - just a long string of numbers.

Have you ordered them?

I have ordered from DS and amazon. Same Valeo box with Cibie light inside.

So that amazon link is for an e-code light? I'm in the market as my Neolites are rusting from the inside out. I'm also really intrigued with the Delta Quad Bar headlights....

Just because they look cool. Ive always liked the crosshair headlights....

Yes, those are E-code lights.
I found it cheaper, easier and faster to buy the lights from amazon but there is nothing wrong with Daniel Stern.

I have found many different brands of car owner sites that recommend the amazon cibie lights along with this guy-

My favorite H4 combination is the Cibie eCode 7" http://www.amazon.com/Cibie-082440-Light-Unit/dp/B008DQV88Q (this price is for a single lens, but that is about half the usual price). I run this exact lens with Osram Hyper 85/80W H4 bulbs on my '85 Westy and have never had better lighting.

If you have really strict vehicle inspections where you live, you should go with a DOT compliant lens like the Hella Vision Plus instead, since the eCode lenses are not technically legal for US roads, even though they create less glare for oncoming traffic: http://www.amazon.com/HELLA-002395301-Halogen-Conversion-Headlamp/dp/B0002M9QK6

Look at the reviews at the bottom of the amazon cibie link if you are interested.

I got my Cibie e-code and hella 80/100 bulbs from amazon too, super fast delivery. Just make sure to install headlight relay, and run extra ground from the headlight bulb socket to the nearest sheet metal. You will be surprise how much voltage drop from old wiring and corroded ground make the headlight so much dimmer. By doing those two thing will make any headlight brighter.

HIDs in a reflector housing?? Few things are more blinding to oncoming traffic.

I agree. Some of those newer cheap Autozone "blue" bulbs, (not sure if they are HID or Halogen), coupled with a standard DOT spec fuzzy pattern lamp lens, the glare is bad. At least in my lifted Syncro I don't get a direct hit like I do in my other cars.

A really good H4/H3 (non-bluish)bulb is the Osram Nightbreaker +. I have the 55/60w in my rectangular ecode low beams & 60w in the high beams. They have more of a pure white color to them - but not blue. Also, not sure if it makes a difference, but the ones I bought off Ebay are made in Germany

The Cibie's from amazon are definitely the real deal. There is no better e-Code H4 available for the price.

HID's installed in reflector headlights are going to blind oncoming traffic regardless of e-Code or DOT markings. There is absolutely no way to change the light source from a filament bulb to an HID capsule without completely destroying the optics of the lights and causing tons of glare.

And that glare will also hurt the vision of the driver. Sure, things up close will be well-lit and you will think you can see better.

But your pupils will contract, and there will be less light projected down the road. That's a bad combination.
