Brazilian rear plates were (I think they still are) installed on the car by the equivalent of the DMV with a metal wire and seal to prevent theft/plate swaps. The holes are for the wire to pass through. _________________ cars:

Did a little searching after your reveal. Perhaps the lower hole is for the taller plate or bracket for taller plate? |

Are there any Brazilian connections on here? I need a correct license plate light. |

Having an electrical issue with my 1985 Mexican Jubilee Bug. I'm thinking either ignition switch or turn signal stick related. When I start her up often neither the oil or gen lights come on, just the brake warning light. When I move off that goes out and the gen light comes on. I have no turn signals. Sometimes the 2 warning light are on, and I have turn signals, but as soon as I use the turn signal the gen light comes on and they stop. I can see the turn signal light in the speedo flashing faintly and the fuel gauge also drops. Otherwise the car runs fine. Stumped. _________________ 1967 Ghia

Weird, it sure sounds like a short somewhere. There are some wiring diagrams on www.1600i.de, they should help you trace the wiring. If intermittent, it sounds like some frayed wires somewhere. _________________ 1971 Super Beetle (past)

a 1985 would be wired largely as a 1978 german model, but the wiring of the warning lights is pretty much the same as a 1600i. IMHO The issues sound like the base plate of the main warning bulbs is shorted to ground. _________________ cars:

Drove 6 hours yesterday to see the eclipse at my sister's farm in SW Ontario. Left Ottawa with snow on the ground, grass is green here.
No crowds here, I'll try to a pic of my car during totality!

Worth the 6 hour drive, clouds cleared 1/2 hour before totality .
Here's a few of many pics. The last pic is also during totality, the glow at the horizon can be seen 360 degrees around us.

Sounds like a fun road trip!
Awesome picture of the Bug with the eclipse in the background. Over here on the left coast, less than 20% so nothing to see. _________________ When I set my timing, why do I flush, then take a pee? |

My 2003 1600i fuel pump has started making a "racket" the past few months. It's getting louder over time so I'm assuming it's getting ready to fail.
It's a replacement pump, probably 5-6 years ago?
Ordered a new pump on EvilBay ($30 GMB brand?).

Now I'm wondering if I made a mistake? Is there an actual VW pump still available? Shoot, maybe should have reached out to Antonio? _________________ When I set my timing, why do I flush, then take a pee? |

I've read that it is hit and miss with the cheap Chinese fuel pumps, I'm not sure if OEM ones are still available, you'd have to reach out to Antonio.
Failing that, it may be possible to rebuild the Chinese one with a better quality pump portion. I have both a (new) OEM replacement and an unused Chinese one (that was given to me).
This is what my Chinese fuel looks like disassembled, you can see the pump portion:

That's really interesting, I'll keep the pump that's in the Bug for sure. I'll swap the units and hopefully this one is quieter. I thought maybe the rubber bushings had failed until I put my hand on the pump while the Bug was running. The pump was shaking like crazy. Certain the pump itself is about to fail.
Thanks for the pictures! Didn't realize you could take the unit apart like that. _________________ When I set my timing, why do I flush, then take a pee? |

Hmm, makes me wonder if one of the plastic portions cracked, like the screened piece (rather that the electric pump itself failing). When you you disassemble maybe have a look and let us know. _________________ 1971 Super Beetle (past)

Swapped out the fuel pump last night and what a difference. Can't hear it anymore. The old one really made a racket, while idling it was very loud. This happened over time, would say 6+ months slowly getting louder.
Took the old unit apart and couldn't see anything broken. Figuring it was just the pump getting ready to fail.

Going to keep the old unit. Wonder if you could buy just the pump?
Strainer had a small amount of gunk, but nothing to make me think it would have made the pump fail.

Open question.
How does the transaxle gearing of a 1996 Mexican beetle, compare to a US spec 1968 beetle?
Thx. |
