Hi all,
First post. New to VW world but over the last few months I have learned an immense amount for you fellow Samba members. I recently took the plunge and made a trade that ended me up with a few VW based machines. One of these machines is a Prowlers Sand Sprite I believe around an '04. The vehicle is the living definition of a basket case. I am excited about the time I get to spend bringing it back. My question is if Prowlers still exists? I see a lot of mention about a guy named Darren on here up until around 2008. I saw a passing mention I thought from 2013. I have tried to call the number a bunch of time at different times of day and different days of the week with no answer or voicemail. I live only about an hour North of where I have read they are located but my job doesn't make it easy to just run down there. Anyone been there recently or know how I can contact them to learn more about my machine?
Thanks in advance. |

They are still there. But last I dealt with them Darren was helping a lot on filming the new fast and the furious. Very helpful guy but has a habit of making promises and commitments he can't hold up. Last time I was there people were pulling their cars out of the shop because he was too busy to work on them. When you could get a hold of them finally it was is family answering phones and didn't know what parts they had or prices so they had to wait for Darren to call on his breaks. Expect to pay double for parts compared to mooreparts or pacific customs. It's sad to say but I think they are losing what little reputation they had. Hope this helps. Good luck. |

I am 99% sure they are closed and out of business. I have heard this more than once. I know of 2 guys looking to get replacement spindles (musta got mine just in time) and they never could get a hold of anybody.
How long ago was it that you were there? |

I would say about 2 months ago. It wouldn't surprise me though. They were doing pretty bad at that time. |

FYI. I got time to run down to Santa Clarita this Saturday. I drove up to the building and there I met Darren. He is definitely still around, and had either 4 or 5 Baja Bugs in work and a few sand rails in his shop. He was off to deliver a very nice bug with full cage as I left. He says that, yes, he has other employment in the standard Hollywood business but he is definitely still around and building things, albeit when his other employment allows. He was very nice and stopped what he was doing to talk to some guy who just wandered through the garage door (me). Thanks for all your info on here guys I would not have given it a second thought of trying to get ahold of him.
Cheers,

It would be good for Darren to update his website and phone system to let people know what's going on with Prowler's. If he can't deal with sales calls and shop work right away, it would be wise to let callers know that Prowler's has become a sideline for him to studio work. I've done plenty of movie work myself, so I get it. A simple phone answering system would take care of much of the issues potential customers encounter. Prowler's has produced some fine stuff over the years. But it would be a shame for Prowler's to die. _________________ Richard
