does anyone know hoaw many of these things are left i am curently working on one for a friend and just kinda wanted an idea of how many were left and what its worth its a LHD 54 with lat model brakes and front end. does this kill the value not having all barn-door brakes. ohh yeah by the way it has front and rear safari bumpers w/ step in rear. and an O.G. (swear to god) set of safari windows. like i said i was just wanting to know what i was working on. |

I have no idea how many are left but most of them are beat up.
I've seen at least 35 of them myself, in varying conditions. There are around 20 of them located at various locations in CA. Some are restored.
There are worth whatever someone will pay. I've seen them for up to $8000 in the past few years. Actual sales prices unknown. I had a '54 I sold for $5000 a few years ago, it was pretty nice.
The later front end might devalue it, it depends how they mounted it since the Barndoor front end is unique.
I'm looking for one... it has to be very nice. _________________ How to Post Photos

There is one in my garage that is all original, except for the engine.....got a 36hp (1955 engine date). Spent all its life within 50 miles of my house -26,000 miles, but probably hasn't been driven since late 60s or early 70s. Slowly working on some body issues (rust issues) that I'm replacing and then repaint......then off to the mechanics stuff. Once I'm done, I'm going to drive that baby all over the place, won't be a trailer queen. |

Sounds cool, I'd love to see photos and know the Chassis #. Regardless of current condition... _________________ How to Post Photos

Earlyman, if you are referring to my sc, it wasn't used for a country club, atleast not to my knowledge. I'm the fourth owner of it. Was used in a small Kansas community in its early days, and then the original owner sold it to 20's year old, who after driving it for a while, decided to move out to California. Left the SC behind, and his brother used it to story hay for his horses for years. His brother sold it to guy (essentially two guys) in Kansas City eight years ago. I bought it from him one year ago. That is the quick story. |

I'd be interested in knowing the full story on that, Barndoor or not.
There was a pair of '60 Double Cabs a few years ago from a hotel in NorCal. Both were low mileage and logo'd but not in the best of shape. I think Greg of Vintage Warehouse used to own one or both of them?
One of them is "restored" in SoCal now with a full IRS and Type 4 drivetrain. _________________ How to Post Photos

i'm thinking that story was in hotVWs or more likely VWtrends. maybe volkswoman wrote the article. anyone else remember that? _________________ Extravagant Lifestyle

Oct 2003 issue ot VW Trends on page 14 in Volkswoman. One of her friends in Mass found a 56 SC on a towtruck ready to go to the crusher. He rescued it at the last moment and it now sits at his house awaiting restoration. Truck has just over 26,000 miles and earlyman was correct, it was never registered for use on the road because of it being used at a golf course. But in the article, she states that the condition of the truckmade it look like it had been around the world five times, while the frame and chassis were gorgeous, the rust has eaten holes through the truck in nearly every other area, from being parked and forgotten. Engine crank and original tool kit were still behind the frount seat. Most of the original parts were there, but nothing was in working order.
The person who owned the truck before, once he died, his heirs ordered all his old equipment (including the sc) to be scrapped. A front loader had tried to pick up the truck and crushed its nose, roof and rear end. The bubble tail lights, reflectors and brake light deck lid were all ruined in the process. He paid $225 for it (Lois Grace's friend).
I remember the story now since Earlyman reminded me where he saw it. I was going to email volkswoman to tell her about my SC, but couldn't find her email address. Anyways, that is the story...... |
