I might be exhibiting the obvious and well-known here (I found nothing via Search), but I thought that some of you might be interested in what I discovered today...

BD bus and same-era bug gas caps are not the same.

Image may have been reduced in size. Click image to view fullscreen.

The cap on the left is a bug cap and the one on the right is from my '54 Kombi. Both are Blau caps.

Besides the obvious ridging difference, the bug cap is taller and notably lighter (approx. 80g difference (320 vs. 400), measured on a kitchen scale).

FWIW my original cap from my '53 Kombi is the same size as the cap for my Nov '58 beetle. One difference in the two caps is my barndoor cap is made of steel, while my beetle cap is made of aluminum. That would account for some difference in weight. Are your caps made from the same metal?

I never even thought to check that.

I've just taken a magnet to the bottom of each cap; only the BD cap sticks. Smile

Live and learn. Thanks for the lesson, chaps.
