I've just re-installed the alternator, pivot bracket, and belt tension adjustment bracket only to discover how much the alternator is able to shift in/out and angle due to the slotted holes in both brackets.

My concern is getting the alternator's pulley to line up well with the fan pulley. NOTE: the alternator pulley is bolted properly on the alternator. I'm talking about adjusting the brackets that bolt to the fan shroud here. I don't want to find out after everything else is back in place and in the way that misalignment causes the belt come off.

I played around with it for awhile and found it really hard to tell when the belt was straight and the pulleys aligned. Is there a good method to get things lined up right?

The bracket that the carriage bolt goes through can move fore and aft. I guess you'll just need to eye ball it.

Yes, both that bracket (what I'd called the pivot bracket) and the belt tension adjusting bracket will move fore and aft, thus allowing the alternator to both shift fore/aft and tilt. I played with it for a while and couldn't really tell when it was right as there just wasn't a real good point of reference.

So with the engines you've built, you just shift things around so it looks "pretty good" and the belt seems to stay on just fine once on the road?

That's about it. I've never had an alignment problem that I can remember.

A straightedge or the edge of a level.
Mark the center of the fan belt.
Measure from the face of the pulleys to the center of the fan belt.
Add shim material to the straightedge if needed, (cardboard, paper, metal) Etc. to compensate for any differences in the pulleys dimensions.

Lay the straightedge across the fan pulley and align the top and bottom of the Alt. pulley to it.

If the engine is out you can just eyeball it. With the engine in you can use either a straight edge or a string line. You could use a level to check that the vertical alignment of both pulleys is the same.

Thanks guys, the engine is in which I guess is why I was having such a tough time eyeballing it. I'll give that straightedge method a shot.
