| Is the baffle plate under the generator stand really necessary? |

Definitely. The cam gears sling a lot of oil in that general area. Back in the 1961-64 40HP era when they still had a small hole in the top of the block, VW even acknowledged that some kind of a deflector might be needed - and specified a sort of a "tower" deflector to be used as seen here:

Doing some work to stop oil leaks on my engine. Its a 1962 40 hp case. The generator stand to case was leaking oil, so this morning I removed the stand, and found that there is no baffle present.
Anyone know where I can buy one of these baffles?

That type is meant to deflect the oil and have it drip off the down pointing baflfles so the baffles point to the right and down on a later engine block
. Your engine block has a smaller hole so you would need to flatten the baffles then bend them so they again point down and to the right over the hole.
Of course fitting it upside down would be better than nothing so oil flying up hits the baffle and drips down. _________________ Ancient vehicles and vessels

| if I had the lator block i would probably open it up to match the later style baffels.that way there would be less area for oil puddling and faster drain back/oil filling |

That later style one is intended for after they changed the opening in the block - Reworking the block for this is specified in the workshop manual as well but that's something you would only want to do at rebuild time. (there are two areas that get opened up)
This is one I did many years ago:

Agreed. So what would you recommend then? Going without a baffle, and probably continue to experience oil leaks from the filler...or modifying the later baffle as described above, or? _________________ “Tinker Toy” 1967 Savannah Beige Beetle Sedan...........Mostly Original Survivor

From the Bentley Service Manual for 1966 - 1969...
“On the 1500 cc engine, an oil deflector plate is installed between the crankcase and the generator support to keep oil from being thrown out through the crankcase breather. With some modification this plate can be installed on earler engines. Gaskets are fitted above and below the plate.”
The picture of the plate in the manual looks like the one currently available for purchase from several vendors.
So, if I’m unable to source the earlier tower type deflecor, I’m thinking I will try my hand at modifying the flat one to fit my application.
Meanwhile, I’ve read a lot of posts here about stuffing the oil filler tube with stainless steel pot scrubbers. Is this something I should consider doing? _________________ “Tinker Toy” 1967 Savannah Beige Beetle Sedan...........Mostly Original Survivor

Either trick would suffice.
If using the steel baffle/plate, suggest trimming it to fit (remove louvers outside of the circle) w/ a Dremel.

The real problem with NA engines is you don't hear the nice whine of the turbo as it spools up.
Where do you put the inter cooler for it at? And does it use its own coolent?
Before I commit, I'm going to do more research because I don't really know what piston rings are. |

I wasnt able to source an og tower type baffle, so I found a local metal shop to fabricate one for me.

Yes, and thanks for the drawing Andy!
The parts appearance is not that great, but it fits well and will never be seen anyway 😃 _________________ “Tinker Toy” 1967 Savannah Beige Beetle Sedan...........Mostly Original Survivor
