|

Is the photo i posted a photo of an oil temperatures Sender?
I assume this would be hooked up to a gauge and not a light?
I have been advised by California Imports that my buggy should have a light that is usually in the instrument cluster of the Speedometer. Should this not be a tube and not a wire as it deals with pressure?
I am replacing the Speedometer with a GPS one, and am wanting to put in (1) Fuel Gauge, (2) Oil Temp gauge (3) Voltage gauge and Oil Pressure light or guage.

That is an oil pressure sensor. It works by providing a ground for the warning light on the speedometer when the pressure is below the minimum (.15-.45 bar). The light often comes on when a Type 1 engine is just idling.

That is your oil pressure sender for the dummy light in your speedo. _________________ Fake rust is for POSERS! |

Thanks for the responses.
So, I assume this would only work with a "dummy" light and not a gauge.
I also assume that since I am removing the VW Speedometer that I can hook this up to a small red light installed on the dash for which I am custom making?
Would there be any place on a stock engine that will allow me to put an oil temp gauge? Or must this be machined or fabricated in any way. To use

As per a Fuel gauge, The tank in my buggy is fairly new ( I only purchased it the buggy last year, do not know what the Previous owner did). Would I be safe to assume that the Fuel sender is new and not the original.
I removed the hood last year, and was sad to see such a wiring job from hell. It looks like a bird nest. I think the PO only had a roll of red wire (shutters) and used it for all connections.
Therefore I will have a new GPS Speedo.....a dummy light for oil pressure, hopefully a Oil Temp gauge and a Fuel Gauge.
Any other suggestions or advise can you share?
PS. I did try getting the fuel gauge on the speedo going last year without any success. I will have to check it for ground. I do have the vibrator installed as well....But could not get it to work. |

You can get a brass Tee and add oil pressure sender or get a new sender with two terminals - one for idiot light and other for gauge. That sender will work - it replaces the solid pug in the oil relief galley on bottom of engine. A dip stick temp sensor is more accurate. The resistance of the gas gauge sender needs to match the gauge. The old arm sensors in stock gas tanks are often bent and abused. _________________ CMC '57 Porsche Speedster Replica and Dolphin boat tailed full pan VW MOD-T Street Buggy |

I'd also recommend some time spent over on the engine and beetle forums. You'll find a lot of info on those platforms that will answer your questions.
VDO makes a two pole sender that goes in that hole, one for the dummy light and one for a externa VDO pressure gauge.
VDO makes two temp senders, one which fits the same 1/4" NPT thread that the brass fittings that another poster referred to, and a second style that replaces one of the oil pressure relief galley plugs. I recommend the latter type. |

I'm using the dual sender for oil pressure light + gauge. For oil temperature, I'm using this. http://www.savemybug.com/

Just so you know- The factory (1 pole) sender turns the dash light on at 2-3psi, where the aftermarket dual pole unit turns the light on at 8-10psi, so idling when the engine is warm can cause some concern when you forget this information... _________________ On a lifelong mission to prove (much to my wife's dismay) that Immaturity is Forever!! |
