|
|
Went to my first and probably last auction today. Not one of those Big Barrett Jackson trailer queen ones, but a local auction of Marshal service seizure vehicles. The feature stars of the show were five split window buses seized from the same shop. The auction was advertised on the local Craigslist, but it attracted outsiders. Present were guys off the radar who haunt the local CL looking for a bus for themselves and have no clue on values, local guys with buses but looking for a deal, LA, Orange, Nor Cal and even the dreaded European flippers and restorers some with very familiar faces seen often at OCTO, etc.
Here were the vehicles and what they went for. Hope you are sitting down:
1967 13 window, walkthru with front seats, no rear or middle, glass missing engine in the cargo area, bumper blades, pretty dry otherwise, stock rear end, crappy new paint and bad, bad bodywork, $12500.
1967 21 window, no seats, bench, IRS rear end, no glass, bumper blades, fiberglass repair to outer floor, some rot around skylight windows, pretty dry other wise, crappy paint and body work, basically needs full restoration (all of them did), rotted missing belly pans, think the top mechanism was missing, $22,000
1966 21 window, painted over rust everywhere, piles of bondo,, had top mechanism, had glass but was a mixed set, no seats, bulk head hacked out, rusty floors, belly pans rotted out, $18k
1964 11 window, pretty dry and solid, crappy bad paint and body work, solid floors, gutted, had glass and one front seat, $12,000!
1958 23 window, lot of rust cut out so floor missing, corners, front valance lower nose, had belt trim, nice chromed spoons, lots of Gerson, Autocraft structural repair pieces, ROACHED roof, rust holes everywhere, 36hp inside, roached front doors, no bumpers, IRC, sold for $18,700. Same dude bought all three sunroof deluxes. _________________ Go Reds! Smash state!

Thanks for posting, interesting the shop had 5 seized. Do you know what buyer gets as a title for seized vehicles? _________________ "I set sail for the new world, then I burned down the mast.... It wasn't the first time, and I know it wont be the last..." Bloodkin

That was another thing, you get title from the Federal Government, but if there is no VIN plate (which was the case with some) it might get "blue titles" which means apparently that the DMV issues a new VIN. Some people there thought it would ruin the value of some of the buses, but the buyers didn't seem put off. _________________ Go Reds! Smash state!

I was following this on Facebook waiting to see if anybody was gonna say something about it over here. I almost went down there today myself just to see the circus. That 58 didn't look that bad in some of the pics I saw but I didn't see it in person. Some people sure enjoy spending their money |

It's funny how people, when they are bidding against each other they will pay more than a car is worth, just to not see the other guy get it. |

Tot answer your question. As long as there remains a big demand and busses are popular, the prices wont come down. Many start out with a cheaper bug but once they have kids and more cash available busses seem very practical and appealing. Seen it a lot here in Europe. I kind off went the same way back in 2007, after owning several bugs. I have 2 split busses now and love em. |

Some of them were quite solid, the 11, 13 window and one of the 21s was not too bad. But, they were pretty much missing everything and you know how expensive that gets. Plus the paint and bodywork were so bad you would have to take them down to metal. I did do a search on this site for what you can get for the money that was thrown down there and if anything I think they overpaid, but not by much. 12k these days does not get you much, but at least it gets you a complete and running bus. _________________ Go Reds! IMHO I dont see asking prices dropping too much. Everyone that has been purchasing last several years at higher prices will not sell them for less than they paid typically, so asking prices will stay high, but actual negotiated prices, will always be different. depends on someones circumstatnce and need to liquidate. _________________ ________________
Thanks Marc

Thanks for your scouting report Dan. I was thinking about going down there but too much life got in the way.
From what I have seen lately prices and still rising. Fast. At least in the single cab arena. _________________ Larry in OB
