I am looking at purchasing a vanagon camper with a subaru engine. I have been calling around trying to find an insurance company but no one will insure the car due to the engine conversion.

How do others insure after a conversion??

In fact I am also restoring my 67 bug and was told by three companies that they will not insure that car either because I have upgraded the original engine from a 1500 to a 1600 engine Shocked

You need to stop being so forthcoming (joking) at least with the bug, you should really state that it has a non-original STOCK engine. This would also come in useful as in some states, you would have to register the car as a street rod, rather than historic vehicle. I know, just bureaucratic bs. As to the vanagon - that one can't help with and again, what somebody did in CA or VT, may not help you out in DC (as far as either registering or insuring) - yep, it can be a major pita, friend went through it in PA with a lowered bug - could not register as historic and then ran into insurance problems. Again, good luck.

This is becoming very apparent (unfortunately), the more companies I call.

while this is likely good here in the General section you may want to inquire over in the vanagon forum
this is a vanagon specific insurance question that many other vanagon owners fall into the same boat.

I insure mine as a regular car, I do not own anything nicer than I can or can't afford. so I don't have any useful input, other than on my insurance I have the 'conversion van' interior insured for $3500 fwiw.

So do you insure your van's interior separately? Sorry, I might not be understanding correctly.

it's just entered on my policy that it's a coachwork conversion interior with a stated value of $3500..

don't mix up that I drive my van like any other car, daily and on extensive trips.
it's also not a high end shiny van, so being less than $20k isn't a big deal for me.
