Hey guys!

First post on here. Yesterday I became the proud owner of a 1980 Westfalia camper. On the test drive the fuel gauge worked... but then, wouldn't you know it, once I got in it to make the trip home, the fuel gauge is stuck. It is stuck so far past empty you can barely see the "pointer".

Being a newbie to the Westy, what should I do? Also, the clock does not work and the light doesn't work on that side of the dash to illuminate the instruments. Could it be a fuse?

Any help is appreciated!

Okay so just got off the phone with Tim's German Auto here in the Dallas area. Guy has a bunch of knowledge with these things. He is saying to take apart the instrument panel and just flick the needle over. I'll be trying that. If anyone else has had this issue, feel free to give me some feedback/advice.

I have never fixed a fuel gauge by flicking the needle. The vanagon uses a plastic foil to connect the components of the cluster to the van's wiring. With age it is very fragile. I would suggest you work carefully. http://www.gowesty.com/library_article.php?id=1385

I would also recommend a Bentley manual. There are some simple tests you can make with a simple 12 volt test light to troubleshoot most problems with the cluster. The circuit foil is NLA, but I did read where Go Westy is selling a harness to take the place of the foil.

Ditto on tread lightly when working on the foil- dash lite
Sometimes a simple wiggle of the dash lites works
As for the clock 90% stopped working on most westys
Fuel gauge ,again, lots of gremlins there, mine swings from empty to whatever
regardless of how much is in the tank- mine is the tank sensor?
