So the new addition to the garage has been parking next to the notch for over a week now. After picking it up last week from the town where our New Zealand VW nationals were held, drove it to the show and shine, parking it up for others to enjoy and then drove back to home 400km round trip, fun times.

It is a 1957 type 2 panel van, imported into nz from Germany in 1962 and is registered as a 1960 saloon, why? it just is.

As you can see it is sporting a fire truck exterior, this was added by the previous owner, who has done a very good job of the make over, down to some very well done hand painted signage, the blue beacon light works, the fire symbol works, all via an original fire truck switch on the dash (running off a second 12volt battery as the van is still running 6 volt)

The history of the van before the fire truck, it was an 80's custom complete with large round rear guards and fat tyres, and a purple/black paint job (some areas inside still have this) dropped sill, which are still there.

It looks to have been a light blue before the 80's custom and below that the original dove blue can still be found.

The van is running a 36hp engine, not the original, reduction gearbox, standard brakes etc

I have no major plans yet, will need a few rust repairs at some stage, I am currently designing and drawing up a camper fit out to be installed, included a flip seat in the front.

And one day, drivetrain upgrade, brakes, narrowed beam, straight axle, new wheels etc, etc but have to finish the notch first

What he asked ^^^^^^ I've been thinking about doing that to my hatch on my panel, just kinda makes sense. Like the bus, cool look to it. Are you going to fix the dropped rockers and lipped dog legs?

very nice semaphore panel, like the overall look of it. seems the bulkhead is hacked anyway, installing westy flipseat would definitely be an upgrade.

At the same time, windowless campers do kind of suck, if only for lack of ventilation

it's one of those words that is used differently....

saloon is a sedan...

just like a sedan is a "linousine" in german

the funny part is that it is not a sedan or a saloon, and it is not a 60, the registration is completely arbitrary

No rear hatch just has steel panel welded over, window can be still seen from interior.

I sort of like the dropped rocker, part of the history of the bus, but not a big fan of the lipped guards so think they will go at some stage

Yes bulkhead is missing, so thought the flip seat would be good addition also.

I thought windowless camper would still work, as I hate all the curtains hanging about, and most of the time rear hatch and cargo doors are open for light. And I just like the panel look

early factory solid rear hatch still had the window pressing on the inside just like panel cargo doors do

So the wof (MOT) man didn't like my hole in the floor, and the rust around the door hinge and the slop in the door hinges, and the rust showing itself in the lower valance . Sad

So I have been pondering, what to do? Do I just patch over it so no one can see?
Or do I now go looking for rust and fix it all good and proper?

I think we will go looking and fix it good and proper, so off came the lower nose panel and outer valance to see what it was hiding
