I just picked up this Trek CX bike at a bicycle swap meet and was wondering if anyone here knows anything about it. It's a 2001ish Trek XO1 cyclocross bike and it has these VW Trek Racing Team decals on both sides of the top tube. I've found a handful of these bikes online, but none of them have the VW decals.
I know back in the Mk3 era they sold a Trek edition Jetta that came with a roof rack and Trek mountain bike. I was wondering if maybe this was part of a special promotion, or did a previous owner just slap a couple stickers on it?
Either way it's well worth the 50 bucks I paid for it, and after some parts bin upgrades it rides really well! It'll be cool to throw it in my bus to ride around at VW shows and stuff.

Nothing special other than the paint job.
Sell.it to someone with a 2001 Jetta s9 they can drive around with it on the roof. _________________ Glenn

I was a Trek dealer during that time when that bike was released. It was a big deal that you could get a kitted out US made cyclocross bike for around 1000 dollars retail. The frame was pretty advanced in aluminum design back then as well. It was essentially an early gravel racing bike, look up the dirty kanza if you’re not familiar with this style of race. Of course technology has left that bike behind as well as any other from that era. But it’s still a very good riding bike albeit stiff and too rough for my age.
As far as the decal goes VW sponsored several of Treks factory teams back then. But not a cyclocross team. Cyclocross was essentially off season racing to get ready for the upcoming racing season. The decal was just one that you could get from any Trek dealer. It’s not a special version like the mountain bike option but the bike is much higher quality than the special edition mountain bike they gave with the Jetta.
If you paid 50 for it you did good! I bet you could get 500 if it’s in good mechanical shape.
I would have to look but I might still have some of those stickers somewhere. _________________ Looking for anything from Hal Casey Motors out of Hamburg New York, from license plate surrounds to matchbooks.

Used bikes are maybe worth 25% of the price and old bikes even less. _________________ Glenn

Yes carbon is much a more forgiving ride yet stiff where it needs to be to get the power to the ground efficiently. All my road bikes are carbon starting with my original Trek OCLV from the late nineties. My 2001 postal has probably 60K miles on it with no failures in the frame. Several worn out drivetrain and wheels though. _________________ Looking for anything from Hal Casey Motors out of Hamburg New York, from license plate surrounds to matchbooks.

Neat bike and thanks for the history on it.
Since I don't know anything about it, I could see it being collectible to someone and have a higher value than expected.
I'd try it out on the gravel paths here, once I flipped the stem _________________ How to Post Photos

Thanks for the information! I'm guessing the original owner grabbed a couple stickers at the shop he bought it from and stuck them on. Still a cool piece of bike history, and I'm happy to add it to my collection! It rides great after a tuneup, it's fun for quick rips around the neighborhood, but between my age and wonky shoulder I'm sticking to my Rivendells for longer rides.
The scooter in the background is a 1963 Lambretta Li125. _________________ 1973 Superbeetle: 1st car, owned since age 12. Update thread --> https://www.thesamba.com/vw/forum/viewtopic.php?p=9919140#9919140
