Boot and washer goes on axle before CV joint. Dished side of washer towards CV joint. make sure you put the CV joint on the correct way or you'll be taking it off again. If you are not sure which side goes on first, line it up/test fit with the boot. One side of the CV joint is larger then the other side.

its designed to put pressure against the joint...once you put on the c-clip,you need to put a socket over it and smack it with a hammer to compress the washer and let the c-clip drop fully into its slot

And if you have dis-assembled the CV joint and can't remember the orientation, then this might help you from putting it together the wrong way round (ask me how I know Embarassed )
