So, the factory stereo is out and it looks like an unmolested harness. However, the Bentley is incorrect on the colors of the speaker wires in the front doors. Both sides of mine have a blue wire and a brown wire with a red stripe. I can't find a year in the Bentley where this is correct, so I'm suspicious of the diagram showing what wires coming out of the radio as well.

Could someone steer me to a good diagram of the factory stereo wires so I don't fry the new head unit and can ID the speakers? Thank you!! It's a Wolfsburg, but the stock stereo looks identical to the one I had in my 1987 Syncro L, so I'm not sure if that matters.

Wow - crud that there is nothing in the FAQ or posts that came up on search on the wiring colors....

IIRC, the diagrams shown in this thread match the stock pinout.
I still have the stock wiring in mine. I can take some pictures tomorrow if needed.

Thanks, JM.

I found that diagram as well online and it was incorrect. However, I sat down and carefully looked at the Bentley again and on another page there is a reference to the wiring diagram for the 86/97 radio. That one was correct in all respects. So to Mr. Bentley - pardon the slur. Heh...

Got the stereo hooked up and running. Now looking for a switched power source. Sounds like crap, with no bass. But that's non amplified head units for you in a giant box with two 4" speakers. I just wanted to start with being able to hear my CDs and such, so all is good. Will upgrade later - dying to put the door panels/power window switches on so I can daily drive it. That required speakers be installed, which required the new head unit, and so on.....

Thanks all. Carry on.
