hey everyone just wanted to introduce myself my names Paul I live in Peoria Illinois. I recently picked up my first split window, a 1960 SWR panel with bullet noise. Couldn't be happier.. I guess I could, if It ran but in time sooner than later hopefully. Needs a lot of things so my plan is to start with little things and slower get it back on the road. Heres some pictures some of you may recognize it.

I started using a razor blade and scraping the top layer of paint some of the red is blown out and the primer under is showing but some of the grey is over the red.

Looks like a great project! Are you going to restore it? If so, buy a case of Naval Jelly, a few rolls of Saran Wrap, and wire wheels with an angle grinder.

Here is our DEC59 built walk thru panel camper conversion. Now removing lots of rust from the inside of the roof due to DPO glued in indoor/outdoor carpet with foam rubber backing that held moisture....

Thanks!

Doing same on the house renovation front! Still got to take some time, even if it is just fifteen minutes a week to get something done on the VWs.

Wire wheel a rusty area in the morning or afternoon. Put the Naval Jelly on the same area in the evening, cover with Saran Wrap, and check how much rust is removed a day or a week later. The cooler the weather, the longer/better the Jelly gets to work, plus if you can keep it out of the direct sun rays which neutralizes it.
Still lots of rust? Wire wheel again after the Naval Jelly has dried after removing the Saran Wrap and repeat till it is all gone!

Looks like you're going to need a front bench seat too. We'll keep our eyes open for one, actually I might still have a seat bottom in repairable shape somewhere, not sure.

Cool Panel, a real patina monster! I'll have my original paint SWR '59 Double-Door Panel at the upcoming BNNTA event not very far from you on the upcoming Labor Day weekend. Come by and check it out... Hell, get yours running and come camping with all of us!

Bill

Get to work restoring that thing. Love panels. To give you some incentive; here is quick photo of my 1960 Double Door. It looked not quite as bad as yours before I started, but love the way it turned out. Brought back to life as close to original as I could make it.

Seven months and 700 hours of labor. It almost killed me. Did it in 06, was the 3rd bus I have done and it is probably going to be the last. Too old and tired to do all the work necessary on another bus.

Well today I got a little time to mess with the rear hatch, it was barely hanging on with only 1 hinge still in tack. I decided to put it out of its misery and remove the last one. I don't know weather to fix it or replace it with a spare I have but wrong color.... Sad I found one online but haven't went through because I have that spare. I also shot an inside from back looking at those side repairs along with cargo floor. If any knows how to repair the hinges or any input i'm all ears. Thanks Paul

The hinge is a single piano style hinge that goes from one side to the other of the door opening. It would depend how you "put it out of its misery" as to how to fix it.

Whichever it goes, you will need to remove the hinge half on the bus. Spray a lot of penetrating oil into those screws over the next week or so before attempting to remove....
