|

I have this steering wheel from a deluxe bus and the color is off white or vanilla. It is the original vw color on the steering wheel and I would like to paint the interior cab the same color off the steering wheel. does any one knows what color this is? or code?
Thank You. |

all i can offer is that the color is silver beige. i have never come up with a code to give to a paint store. when i painted my deluxe components i just had them match a NOS horn button. from what i understand Koch's in California can supply(sell) the color as they restore steering wheels but they wont give the info for it. |

The oriiginal steering wheels are not L466 silver beige. That color is much darker. The replacement door handles you get from Wolfsburg are silver beige. I just bought some Porsche light ivory - I think it is 136 Light Ivory - and I think this is more like the original color for the steering wheels. If you find the exact color - please let me know - I want to paint the top half of my 65 with a light beige like the steering wheels, but it is NOT L466 Silver Beige. If you want some L466 Silver Beige, you can buy a rattle can from Wolfsburg West for 13 dollars, or they have the proper color - except not as much greenish as wolfsburg - at Sherwin Williams auto paint. It is available only in the cheap line of paint - western Hi-Glo, but it is the correct color - almost exactly same as the wolfsburg rattle can. Once you buy this you will see that the steering wheel was not L466 but it is listed as 036 silver beige which in not same as L466. I still think 1960 - 62 Porche Light Ivory is the way to go. |

i sort of agree to silver beige looking darker . i would imagine color changed slightly over the years. before i posted something that could have been totally false, i looked in a book to confirm what i thought. the parts manual states steering wheel-silver beige chassis# 20-041 712(1952) to 374 810(1958) |

I can't speak from personal experience with door handles but I would not count on replacement door handles from WW being the right color. I have bought other white items from WW like rear hatch covers and plastic coat hooks and they don't match AT ALL with my originals or with NOS parts I found later.
I have a stack of original white steering wheels and one is a darker shade so the color may have changed at some point.
As far as I know, L466 refers only to VW paint that is shot out of a gun. Parts that are cast in a particular color or dyed or whatever use a different color code based on the particular part, like 036 or 744. _________________ How to Post Photos

|
|
Would anyone be able to tell me what color the steering wheel would have been on a stock 1966 deluxe bus?
Can anyone post pictures of the two colors side by side?
I'm getting mine recast, and Kochs asked me what color I wanted today. I told them I needed to check on Samba and get back to them.
They have my wheel, so I can't really see it to look at the color of it now to make a decision....I think it's original to my bus, but not 100% sure.
What color looks better?
I couldn't seem to find it in the paint section literature, and it seems like the answers here were not definitive.
I'm not 100% sure of the color I will paint my bus yet. It may be velvet & white, or cumulus & white, mouse gray & white, or its original color titan & beige.....I still have time before I decide final color.
Thank you for the information.

This is a fully loaded question. So, without answering it, I will aver that the original color of a titian red bus, for your wheel is silver beige. You cannot and will not be able to choose from a computer screen. Koch's silver beige interpretation is in my opinion closer than Wolfsburg West's (where most folks buy interior paint in a rattle can) here . They have been doing these for over 30 years. _________________

Ok, so with the titan red is silver beige, thanks.....Anyone know about the steering wheel color for blue & white, green & white, or gray & white deluxes?...Would it be the ivory cream? My bus was originally Titan Red, but honestly I'm veering away from that color, it's not my favorite combo.
I know Koch's does a great job, that's why I sent it to them, but they called and asked what color....I thought they just would match it, I was unaware there were two options. So trying to decide what to do.
Thanks,
Spitty

I "custom mixed" the paint for my SW by eyeball and it looks nice, there's a lot of green in the color which surprised me, along with gray and maybe a hint of red. See page 32 of the link below for my steering wheel restoration.
Good Luck!

According to the WW color charts, all of the 66 Deluxe color combos had a silver beige wheel. The (1964) gray/white busses also had silver beige. FWIW, the original color was Titian, not Titan. |

Thanks everyone for the information. It looks like I will go with the Silver Beige on the recast from Koch's. I'm going to give them a call in the morning.
I'm going to ask them if I can get some paint for the turn signal, gear shift rod, and steering column, and or ask if I can ship them down and have them painted, so it all matches.
Am I correct in understanding the above named parts too would be silver beige?
Thanks for all of the help....I'm a totally rookie and I'm trying to build my bus to look as stock as possible. |

Not sure if this is off topic, if so I'm ok with removing it.
Besides the steering wheel, what else in the interior cab was painted silver beige?
I'm thinking I may see if Kochs will paint any other cab parts that were also originally silver beige, so all parts are a good match.
I believe the turn signal pod was also painted to match the wheel, is it?
Thanks,
Paul |
