Nice looking bus and welcome to the samba. There are a couple things about your engine that need fixing though. _________________ Lead Mechanic: San Diego Air and Space Museum

I am aware of the fuel filter and lines as a priority.

Very nice!
You may want to move your fuel filter to under the bus or at least put it before the pump not after it. _________________ Joey

What else?
Well if it was me I'd replace the engine driven fuel pump and remove the aftermarket electric pump. I'd relocate the filter to above the transmission for fire safety and install a new one. I'd turn around the coil just cause it's upside down from how it should be mounted. I'd replace that crappy air filter with an original oil bath filter. Probably replace the crankshaft pulley with a degreed one. Your distributor isn't clocked correctly but it can still run well like that. Check your timing though. Oh, and as you said replace the fuel lines. _________________ Lead Mechanic: San Diego Air and Space Museum

Aeromech,
Thanks for the tips.
I have a shifting problem that I cannot for the life of me find a similar post in the forums. (I have read probably 50-100 searched posts). Shifting 1-4 is great but just a little bit sloppy. If I go into reverse it is very, very hard to get back into a forward gear.
So I am starting at the shifter and working back. I noticed a bunch of washers under the reverse stop plate and I do not see them in the manual??? I will be getting a shift rod bushing kit and hope this works. The round disc above the ball on the shifter has a flat wear spot on it. Will this be an issue? _________________ 1969 Camper Van - 1600 SP |

Could be. There shouldn't be any washers under the stop plate. Be sure you have it oriented correctly. _________________ Lead Mechanic: San Diego Air and Space Museum

Aeromech, I like how you changed the font. It states the question without needing to read the complete quote.
The washers may have been someones idea of a short shifter. Or they where addressing a problem. At any rate as Auromech stated they do not belong there.
Good luck

I took off the front linkage last night and the guide pin looks good.
Here are some photos of the wear spots I mentioned earlier.
On the Shift Rod
On the Reverse Stop Plate
Here are the extra washers as I found them.
Everything else looks good.

Did you look the reverse stop plate over well for cracks. I've found them broken before. I'd say lube everything up and put it back together without those extra washers and see how well it works. _________________ Lead Mechanic: San Diego Air and Space Museum

RE your engine-
FYI, you are missing a number of clamps, seals and tin pieces, they all need to be there for the bus to stay cool, there are a number of samba post that have pictures of all the tin and seals and clamps that where on your engine when it left the factory
The ones missing I can see from your (1) engine picture are;
Heater tube clamps(top and bottom) and rubber rings on the bottoms-
Heat riser connector and seal from front tin to cylinder tin, as well as the seal that goes in it-
Oil tower drain tube bottom seal-
Does not look like your have the air flaps installed(Quite important piece for cooling)-
Missing Spark plug wire holders?
Pulley nut cover Tin-
PS, you have the wrong exhaust system on it(from a Bug) that may allow Carbon Monoxide to get sucked in the heating system due to the missing tin… and aerodynamics of the bus; bus exhaust exits on the side, so exhaust is left behind with turbulent air flowing down the sides of the bus…
Lot of things to be wary about that previous owners may have done to your bus, I do not see seatbelts in the back, and the modifications that they have done to the interior may not be so great in an accident(be weary of loosely installed furniture or sharp corners/hard objects near passengers ;0)
If you have not already; I highly recommend you check out Richard Atwells Baywindow Guide to Upgrades, you will not regret reading it or anything else he has written about T2 Buses, it will save you lots of time, money and frustration :0)
