the OP photo is no longer . im just trying to confirm this is the proper Dimmer switch for a 51 split bug .......the reason i ask is most of the screw terminal switches im familiar with have a hole you insert the wire then the screw tightens down on the wire ......this is screw terminal but there is no hole .

like just put it under the screw n tighten it ?

i have the next generation dimmer that is more ovalish in shape where this is more round , are they just interchangeable ? i just bought this thinking its the early round split version ... i looked for some photos on the samba but i ddnt find much info here ?

mine s not like the photos above . maybe a replacement ? looks like it should work .

doing a google image search using the underside view brings up results indicating it was used on mercedes cars in the 50s...

The early round dip switches that I have owned had connector screw access holes on the topside, and the screws were smaller than in these pics. There was also a VW emblem in the (bakelite?) on the underside.

ya , well now i feel pretty foolish ..........i spent a good part of yesterday examining / studying VW dimmer switches on the samba and got a little better understanding ..........Ya i looked up the switch i have it is indeed for a Mercedes .........that said , it might work as the wiring numbers are the same BUT im working on a 51 VW not a mercedes .......i wrote the seller but havent heard back yet ...... Sad

the samba seller is not happy with me . when i tell him its a mercedes part not VW after receiving the part , now he says i am wasting his time .

" I did not state this was for any specific vehicle nor year in my add. I came across it with 5 other dimmers. I asked around the VW community as to what it was and was told it was early beetle but did not state that in my add. All I ask from a customer is that they look at what their buying before having me a ship a part and to ask questions or for more pictures prior to shipping. I state this very clearly because I don't like wasting my time for people buying stuff for their cars who don't even know what it is their buying.
Please see attachment stating just this which is very clear to see in the add. Glad you did all this research, probably would be best to do the research before buying a part not afterwards? "

i read his fine print BUT the part was listed in the thru 1957 type 1 VW part section ........ so why misrepresent by putting a Mercedes part there ....

the part is indeed a Mercedes part NOT a VW at all .......
