I went to install kick panels onto my bus now that I'm able to get to some of the cosmetic stuff. More fuckery was realized when I was unable to install the driver's side kick panel because the fuse box is sticking out WAY too far.
How SHOULD this fuse box be mounted under the dashboard?

Holy cow that's different than mine, LOL but that does actually make sense because it means I wouldn't have to remove the kick panel to change a fuse.
Mine is a '77. _________________ 1977 VW Type 2 Bay Window Westy FI |

It was likely moved down and to the left the same as my 78. The only reason I can figre us that the fuses were easier to access. I’ve since moved it back. Check above and you should see the original mounting holes. Hopefully they did a better job of extending the wires. Mine were cut and splices added in the middle. _________________ '78 Westfalia Deluxe - Dakota Beige

How did you figure that out so quickly, Busdaddy?!?! This explains SO much.
So it looks like in my ‘77 the fuse box was slightly up and to the right of where it currently is, rather than way up and to the left line in the first pic. _________________ 1977 VW Type 2 Bay Window Westy FI |

Bumping this thread up again. I now know where the fuse box is supposed to go (sort of) but am looking for a more accurate bit of info. Is it a single fastener that holds the fuse box? Looking for any pics… _________________ 1977 VW Type 2 Bay Window Westy FI |

This helps tremendously, thanks!
I looked, and both my brackets are present. _________________ 1977 VW Type 2 Bay Window Westy FI |

Here's another pic from my gallery that shows where the fuse box is located with the other components in place. It mounts with a single screw on either side and uses the "ears" that are spot welded to the fresh air box to locate it properly:
