A friend of mine has this sitting in his grandpas backyard. I really want it to add to my collection but not sure if its going to be too much work. The biggest problem I see is there is no dropgates. What do you guys think about it? _________________ 1971 westy

Hell yes.
How many solid 68 pickups do you see around these days? There are piles of shit selling for $5-10K in the classifieds. Hard to tell from the pics but looks pretty good to me. Gates available from Gerson or look around for a nice 2nd hand set. Yes it will be a lot of work but worth it in the end.

You don't need drop gates to drive and you cant go wrong with a Single Cab _________________ 1966 Velvet Green Standard |

| If the price is right. The gates are spendy. And 68 only stuff can be cost prohibitive too. It looks like its worth saving. I have some wheel arches off a 71 bus that I will donate to you if you get that. Its straighter than the one I got. |

| If you can't find drop gates, have a Carpenter build you some out of Walnut planking. |

If the biggest problem is the lack of drop gates, you are doing well. Last time I checked, KlassicFab was selling a set of gates for about $2000. Looks like there are sections (at least one) cut out of the bed, but that can all be repaired. Gerson has stuff for that, too.
It will be work, for sure. The work will definitely be worth doing, for someone. The question is: Is that someone you?
If you decide to make up wooden gates, I would not advise walnut. You need a more durable weatherproof wood, like ash. Save the decision on the gates for the end, after the thing is all up and running to your satisfaction.. _________________ John

YES.
Trust me...these trucks are worth saving. And as others have said, this one looks like it isn't too bad off. Post some more photos? _________________ 1976 Transporter "Betsy" [Reef Blue, Rebuilt 2L w/ Raby CS heads, 010 Auto. ]

If you enjoy VW's, have the time and the price is right go for it. They don't build them anymore so what is out there is it. It isn't like you can go buy a new one and the restored ones are out of most of our price ranges unless we sell something else we own. _________________

I have a question about the rear fender well. Shouldn't it be straight across instead of arched? The rear rims look wider so I'm guessing that's why the fender flares are there. _________________ 1971 westy
