I have ran a search but couldn't find any direct comparison posts. I was curious what the pros and cons of adding this type air cleaner..

...compared to a stock system. I have seen pictures of other peoples Type I engines and have seen both set ups and I was curious which is better (or if there is a difference). I have a 1971 Westy with stock 1600. Thanks in advance for thr help. _________________ He is no fool who gives what he cannot keep to gain that which he cannot lose.” ― Jim Elliot |

Nothing is going to work as well as the German oil bath air cleaner. This subject has been brought up a lot over the years. Not one person had a viable argument that anything aftermarket is better. _________________ Contact me at [email protected]

The stock oil bath air cleaner has ridiculous filtration. On a stock dual port 1600, you will have decreased lifespan with an aftermarket air filter. You will also have an unnoticeable performance increase. _________________ Wash your hands

to get more power out of an engine more air must be moved thru it. This means larger displacement, tuning the cam to the RPM one is using the engine at, changing gearing to make the engine run at a more efficient RPM, opening up restrictions to air flow. On a VW motor the air cleaner is not the most restrictive area so making changes does not result in any noticeable performance gain. Instead the bus will be noisier and you will enjoy driving it less as your music will be drowned out. So will the passenger. If you are looking for bolt on power, get an exhaust that flows more freely and that will let you make a little more noticeable power. The downside is it takes life off the engine because VW deliberately made the engine more restrictive to detune it. The exhaust does not need to be loud to be less restrictive. _________________ "Most people don't know what they're doing, and a lot of them are really good at it." - George Carlin |
