I believe, and I'll wait for everyone to get back from Havasu to confirm this, that buses before a certain year (and I want to say '56, but I could be wrong) used the 20-XXXXXX extension for chassis numbers. Later on VW decided to use the model number as the first two digits.

Really?! I was right about it being '56? How cool. Very Happy Was it when they moved to the Hannover factory from Wolfsburg?

I checked a couple books I have
-Transporter specification guide by David Eccles
-VW Type Two age finder by International Vintage VW magazine; 1950-1968 (a British publication I picked up years ago)

According to the Eccles book (which is an awesome book!) the "26" designation was used for pick-ups and double-cabs from 1950-53. From 1953-59 they got a "2/26" designation. From 1959-67 they had a variety of "26x" designations (i.e. 261, 263, 264, 265, 267, 268) depending on which side the rear doors and steering wheel were located.

Both books would put the production date of that VIN# (20 099 832) as sometime in October of 1954. September '54 production ended with #20 099 251 and October '54 ended with #20 102 992.

This might also make the truck a 1955 model since the factory generally switched over to the next model year production in August. However, I'm not sure when they started doing this "officially". I do know that they still do it now, starting the next model year's production run in August.

By the way, the David Eccles book is still available and well worth the $30 US price.

26 = Single Cab

The 3rd digit indicates other things like left hand drive (LHD) or right hand drive (RHD), or doors on the left or right. This 3rd digit was not used on the Barndoor id plate.

The August model year start did not begin until 1955, with 1955 being a short model year, January -> August. Note that August 1 was not a consistent start date, it changed almost every year.

20-099832 is October, 1954 production, making it a 1954 model, as was mentioned.
