I am having trouble seeing if my newly installed CB is functioning properly. I don't hear anyone out there. I checked to see if there were online instruction manuals, with no luck. Anyone with CB experience, can you give me some advise on working this thing. I am 10-7 with out your help.

I know the very first antenna I used with my CB radio had a reach of maybe 500ft! I found a 2ft firestik antenna on eBay with a magent mount for $20 or something and it really helped!

I have a 48" fiberglass wrapped whip antenna. The unit I have is a Realistic TRS-427. All the lights come on and digital channel indicator works. The RF Gain knob affects the frequency strength indacator. But, no sound.
If I can't figure this thing out, I'm going to be 10-35. |

well, i don't know what a trs-427 is, but i do know what i've got.
vintage, baby!
radio shack "CB FONE-23". yeah, you guessed it, it's a CB that looks like a phone. you have to press the button on the "receiver" to talk. the housing is bent because there is a place to "hang up" the receiver when not talking.
23 channels (before they went to 40) of pure pre-yuppy power!
(please don't ask the rationale behind such a product. i have contemplated it, but it just leaves me confused.)

There was an auxillary speaker wire that was cutting off the base speaker. Solution, unplug the auxillary speaker wire. Problem solved.
I'm ready to 10-59 to Havasu. |

When I was a little kid in the 70s my parents bought me a CB board game. It was awesome. My buddies and I thought we were so cool. It completely taught us how to talk on a CB. I wish i could remember the name of it. |

did you try tuning the first antenna? I had a cheapo 40 channel radio that I bought a Shakesphere antenna for thinking that was the problem, it still didn't tx/rx good at all. eventually I found out about tuning the antenna and improved it greatly. I had to cut like 4 inches off of the mast and fine tune with the set screw but ended up with great reception. I went from talking to people a mile away to talking to people 100 miles away! |

One of our club members has a ham station as his cb. When he talks EVERYBODY listens!
Hell, I think they can pick him up in the space station! _________________ Some people are so busy being clever they don't have time enough to be wise. |

Thanks for the complement! If you notice, it has a PA switch. I also need an external speaker to get that working.

Are you sure your antenna is matched to your CB? It must have an impedance of 50 ohms (52 is prefered). Some antennas are 75 ohms and will not work with a CB.
Something else that may help would be to check the ground between your chassis and the antenna. You should have damn near 0 ohms between the antenna shielding and your chassis. _________________ Suicide is man's way of telling God, "You can't fire me; I quit!" - Bill Maher |
