Hi my engine number is R124280. I believe i have a 1600 and it's a single port. From this number can you identify if it was originally born in a Type 2 and also the year? Anything else? BTW, I looked here but not much help http://www.thesamba.com/vw/archives/info/engine_letters.php

Thanks

can you take a better picture? "R" is not a VW number.

1600 Single Ports might have a "B" number.

a close-up of the manifold, where it connects to the head will tell you if it is in fact a B motor.

Need a closeup and clear picture of the number.

Else you can clean the number area, use a soft pencil and go over the number and use cellotape and take an imprint of the number for a clearer view.
