I have a 1966 bug but it doesn't have the original tranny(I'm not sure what year it is).
It has a plug on the nose cone to install a back up light switch. Is that all that's necessary to get reverse lights or is there something internal in the tranny that's required?

No, just stick a switch on there. The hockey stick has a nub on it that swings over and trips that switch.

A stock/original '66 trans doesn't have the threaded hole for the switch, that started in US '67 models.

If your trans is original and never updated, new replacement nose cones have the hole for a switch and are a direct bolt on...

I just installed a rebuilt 67 tranny in my 66 with a reverse light switch and I added reverse lights. All you have to do is add a switch and wire it up

Make sure you use the thick aluminum sealing washer that's with the plug. If you don't use this washer the switch will be too close to the R shift rod and it will prevent you from engaging reverse.
Note: it is the Reverse shift rod that actuates the switch. Nothing to do with the hockey stick.

Hello; I bought a vw dune buggy that has parts from various years and trying to track down parts. I have a swing axle with no back up switch. My question is can I install a back up switch by just changing the nose cone and wiring it up or do i have to change any internal parts in the tranny??

That's correct, only the nose cone is different with no other internal parts to change.

It's actually the flat end of the reverse shift rail that acts on the tip of the switch, so no worries with the hockey stick either (Beetle hockey sticks are all the same from '61-'79 anyway).

Bruce also gave a good tip above, be sure to use the good thick sealing washer or it could inhibit full reverse gear engagement Wink

Don't be afraid of the wiring ;
pull 12 volts off the coil ( is only on when the key is on ) ; run through the tranny switch , to a light on the rear ;grounded...

Add an inline fuse to the coil circuit as well.
IMO .. protect the entire circuit..

I never understood why VW never fused the IGN 15/54 "ON" voltage to the coil circuit from the Ign switch..

Lots of cooked harnesses over the years because of that penny pinch...

Because, not if, but when the fuse goes bad you have the VW stall out in possibly a bad place to do so.

Yeah.. I guess a melted harness and possible fire is a bit safer.. Rolling Eyes

Fuses open when a circuit is overloaded or shorted.. they just don't go bad..

If that bad fuse pop stall theory were true... all modern cars today are just ticking stall bombs..

Well have over 300,000 miles and 30 + years of driving old ACVWs and never have had a wiring problem with stock wiring. Of course keep the wiring in good shape, especially in the engine compartment where wiring gets brittle insulation. With anything (like fuel lines), preventive maintenance is a must.

One thing to think about, adding a fuse to the circuit would add 6 more man made connections to potentially break down from oxidation or looseness resulting in a Voltage drop:
1-Terminal crimp on Black wire from fuse panel +15
2-Push on terminal connection to fuse holder in
3-Fuse holder to fuse, input side
4-Fuse output side to fuse holder out
5-Push on terminal to fuse holder
6-Terminal crimp on Black wire to coil +15

Old style ceramic fuses also get hot and cold thus expand and contract, eventually breaking down and open circuiting where they are bent.
I've fixed more than one reverse lights inoperative issue by simply replacing a fatigued fuse and cleaning the holder.

A soldered in fusible link may be more reliable in the long run, say limited to about 20 Amps.

I fuse the ignition coil wire up front. VW fused the ignition wire before running it to the reverse light switch for cars equipped with one. I think lack of a fuse to the front parking lights under the sloped covers was an even worse idea than the ignition coil decision. I either move that to the tail light fuse and have them stay on with the headlights, or I fuse that wire.
