hey body/paint folks,

I am re-doing a 73 sedan, and I have a question about the bumpers:

They are in fine shape structually, but the chrome is hurting pretty bad. Can I blast the chrome off and paint it like a body panel, or is there some special process used for painting bumpers?

thanks.

you could attemp to DA it with 38grit, rough it up, move to 60, then 80 until move of the imperfections are out then coat it with etching primer to prevent rust, then high build primer, block it down, seal it and paint it.

or sand blast it, etching primer, highbuild, block it, seal it and paint it

both of those options will yeild you a high quality finish if you take your time and do it right..

i painted mine years ago doing the same thing
just scuffed them up good with a wire brush fitting in the angle grinder, etch primed, high build then top coat

my back one had a bit of rust starting on the top, the wire wheel took that off and high build helped fill any imperfections

So i am preparing to paint my bumpers. They are covered with paint i assume is factory. I was planning on stripping the rust and paint on the inside and parts on the outside with a wire wheel. Is this OK?

Also I was going to use Rustoleum brand rattle cans for the job.
1. etching primer https://www.rustoleum.com/product-catalog/consumer-brands/auto/primers/self-etching-primer
2. high build primer https://www.rustoleum.com/product-catalog/consumer-brands/auto/primers/filler-primer-spray)
3. block with what grit sand paper recommend?
4. would sealer like this be ok? (https://www.rustoleum.com/product-catalog/consumer-brands/auto/primers/primer-sealer)
5. top coat canvas white https://www.rustoleum.com/product-catalog/consumer...+Turquoise

ultimately asking if the primer/sealer/paint choices are ok and which grit sand paper is best for blocking down filler?

thank you for your input.

If you are not going to use a 2 part paint with hardener, I think skin coating them with filler would be better for the voids.

This is above my pay grade. Just a beginner diyer with no painting equipment or experience. Not trying to put together a show winner. Just trying to clean them up and stop some surface rust.

Most chrome bumpers rust from the back.

i forgot to say that my bumpers are not chrome but are Pastel white LD90 on a 71.
I already removed all paint down to bare metal, applied Krud Kutter rust remover, sanded with 400 grit like the directions on the self etching primer said to, and put on 3 coats of self etching primer.
Next warm clear day i will go to the high build primer. any objections to this process?

Just curious, does primer seal the moisture and air out to prevent rust? How come you have to use a sealer? shouldn't the sealer be applied after the paint?
Thank you for your input.

Block out with 180-220, you could finish with 320 but that might not be necessary cor what you are doing.

The primer sealer is sort of a gimmick type product. You dont need it IMO. Even using the two types of primer might be overkill. I'd say just get some simple rustoleum multipurpose primer and enamel paint. Dont overthink this... just sand the whole bumper down with 80 then 150 grit, you can apply some body filler at this point if you want to. It will hide small knicks, pitting, or deep scratches, tiny dents, etc. Then block that down with 150. Then clean the bumper and shoot with 2-3 coats of primer, then block out again. Then clean the surface of bumper again and apply 2-3 coats of paint. Let dry for atleast 3 days before even touching it.

If you had a small paint gun and compressor I'd reccomend SPI epoxy primer and then some Restoration Shop 2K Urethane single stage paint.
