|
|
Just acquired a 59 beetle and removed shift rod to improve shift quality.
After cleaning out tunnel of nest and dead mouse; I am ready to install shifter rod. I read related posts, and need to confirm 1959 did NOT have nylon bushing. I purchased one but I'm pretty sure the shaft housing is not designed to accept the install. The shaft coupler seems to be in good shape, what do I do to improve shifting. Sloppy shift finding 3rd instead of 1st; grind when down shifting to 2nd.
Thanks
Tom. Did I mention I'm a newbie? |

Confirmed. They didn't add the nylon bushing until later.
I don't really know how well or badly the old "leaf spring" setup worked. But I suppose you could remove and then rivet or weld in a later style shift rod bracket in place of what you have now, and then use the nylon bushing.

This is the bracket that should be in your Bug. No plastic bushing required.
If it's still in good shape a bit of grease once in a while will keep it that way. If it breaks you will know it because your shift rod will drop to the bottom of the tunnel and you're done for the day. They are no longer available unless someone recently has started reproducing them, but the later style ones with the plastic bushing can be installed and work the same.
But more likely your shift problem lies elsewhere. Start by reading up on how to adjust the reverse lock-out plate which fits between the shift lever and the chassis. Next, check where the coupler fits onto the transmission and see what's happening at the hockey stick. Split case transmission shouldn't have any trouble here. Full syncro transmission installations (if you have one) in cars that originally had split case transmissions need special attention to get the shift rod connected to the proper location on the hockey stick. |

Thanks to this forum I have the shift rod back in my '59 bug.
Took it out for a spin and adjusted the plate position a couple times. I have a slight sync problem between 2nd and 3rd but not too bad, Will monitor and possibly adjust.
Next will be seal on main , oil leak.
