My Daughter and I are disassembling the engine in her 78 bug. We have the engine out and are trying to remove the fan shroud. The alternator strap isn't like in "normal" beetles like in the Bently. There are nuts on both ends of the alternator strap. The alternator pedestal isn't really a pedestal on this engine but a whole housing for FI stuff I guess. The right nut is easily removed. The left nut is under some of the FI stuff and we can't figure out how to get at it. Does anyone have any hints that would help release the alternator strap?

Unfortunately, you're probably going to need to remove the FI components that are in the way, the nut is on top of the 2 piece intake manifold that the AFC bugs have.

We got the shroud/alternator off. Yes you do need to remove some of the "FI Stuff". Specifically (now that I've read the Bently FI section a little more), we had to remove the throttle valve housing to get access to the other nut on the alternator strap. We had already removed the air intake sensor housing and air filter to drop the engine.

I don't know how I missed the other post. Before I posted I searched for an hour or so. In any case, thanks for the information.
