Do a complete 60,000 mile service. That'll take care of all the maintenance as well as an inspection of everything so that you'll have a pretty good idea of where the Vanagon is wear- wise. The best tool you can buy is a Bentley manual. It'll tell you what to maintain when and how to check wear items for durability. You'll always have stuff like starters and alternators for which there is no comprehensive test; e.g, it may be "good" right now and fail tomorrow, but with the Bentley you'll be able to properly diagnose and repair problems. And, we all know that "knowledge is power". Congratulations on your Vanagon!!! Very Happy

If the P.O. did not use the correct antifreeze I would flush the coolant system. I can't remember which kind of antifreeze it is, but I know that one of the main reasons that the Vanagons had such problems with the heads is because the wrong antifreeze will corrode the heads. But after doing this you must bleed the system, you will have to jack up the rear end to do this.
