Subject title says it all. Should I be worried? I changed the oil not long ago and didn't see it then.

Cool weather and burning fuel that releases moisture past the piston rings causes water in the oil and condenses in the oil filler area.

Not something to worry about if you have all of your engine tin in place, with thermostat and flaps.

Try not to do only short drives. You want the engine to warm up which will take at least 15 minutes in cool weather. If you have to do a bunch of short drives, arrange to do all your stops out bound from home and take the long run from the farthest place back home to get the engine as warm as possible. Your muffler will last longer to boot.

Knew a fellow who had a kubel and just pulled it out of the garage all the time to show off to VW folks who stopped by. He had to replace the muffler about once a year, and did not do any long distance driving in it. So the muffler sat with water in it all the time, causing it to rust out.

It was just a matter of time before this topic arrose. Yepp short drives does it this time of year. At least once a week take it out and drive it for a good 30 minutes, no stop and go either.

I greatly reduced the problem by placing a calcium chloride air dryer in the garage.

Get that puppy out on the freeway occasionally and put in some good high speed runs (what ever your car can handle). This where the topic of proper oil temp gets all of its attention and or myths from. Some people state that 180 degrees is the ideal temp, but others lean towards 220 degrees. Water boils at 212 degrees at sea level, so you can see where the debate comes from. I happen to prefer 220 degree oil temp, just for the simple fact is that I no longer have the white foam.

What ever side of the fence you are on, the most important thing you can do for ANY engine, is to take it out on a freeway and blow it out occasionally.

Do you have a thermostat and flaps? Make sure your flaps aren't stuck open, otherwise, it sounds like you are doing everything right.

Yeah this comes up every year around this time. They should have listed yellow goop as an option on ACVW's.

I know for sure I have a thermostat. Weather it's hooked up I don't know.
I just bought the car about a month ago and it's been too cold to get under it, (for my liking). Some things you gotta do though.

If it's very cold where you live, the engine will not warm up properly without a working thermostat. 10 degree F, cooling your engine at full flaps open? Not so good.

With the freeway run you do, I am surprised you have the white goo. I would have reason to beleive that your car does not have a thermostat or the flaps.
