Lighter blue like the original film
Small update tonight after work
Did a little bit on the dash
I realized that I don’t have a cigarette lighter hole in this body
I did in the first one, so I bought a lighter
Don’t know if I wanna drill the dash or just install a usb in the ashtray

I’ve enjoyed reading through this thread over the last few weeks as I catch up, the Herbie films mean a lot to me. They are why I have a soft spot for Beetles and why I’ve bought one now at last! I’ve recently rewatched the original four films and I felt the same emotions as I did as a small child, although the “bananas” film is definitely my least favourite.
I’ve seen lots of different replica vehicles from many different films such as Vanishing Point, Mad Max, Gone in 60 Seconds as well as countless “Herbies” and not all have been done correctly. So it’s nice to see someone who’s taking the time and effort to create an accurate replica of Herbie. Keep up the good work! |

Unless you're a frequent cigarette lighter user, I'd opt to leave the dash as-is. It looks good without the hole. The USB in the ashtray is a cool feature for cell phone charging. _________________ .

We have the same reason for being Bug guys, and I agree that Bananas isn’t my fav either lol
My Herbie is fairly accurate to the filming cars
But I have Made a few compromises
For one, mine has a headliner whereas the movie cars did not
My dash is also smooth and doesn’t have brush strokes lol _________________ My Photobucket for my Herbie Project - http://s1288.photobucket.com/user/TK-439/library/Herbie?sort=3&page=1

I remember the first time I saw the first film, I was very young. I loved it to bits and was glued to the screen but when it got to the part where Herbie gets sad and runs away I began to cry and when he got to the bridge I ran out the room screaming and crying to my bedroom and refused to leave the room. My Dad had to carry me down stairs and forced me to watch it to see that Herbie was ok in the end.
The music from the early films always fills me with joy and I was disappointed that in the later films that signature tune had been diluted and whatever the bananas music was I don’t know!
I saw “fully loaded” whilst on a flight to the USA from Manchester with my parents, I’d have been aroun 19 at the time. Coming from a racing family and travelling out to see Sprint Car friends of ours in AZ I was interested to see what was occurring in this film. If I never see it again for the rest of my life that will be just fine. |

I dont smoke at all LOL
And I was considering a USB in the ashtray.
But I see that Herbie had a choke next to the ashtray , so I'll probably put the lighter in that location

Switched gears and did some engine related items today
I installed the decklid seal and little rubber plugs on the apron
I installed the carbs, intakes and linkage
The linkage still needs hooked up
I also installed the plug wires
Then I added the breather box
I have to order the fittings for the valve covers before I run the hoses
I did a few little things that aren’t worth showing pics
Glove box spring
Speedo cable
Hood release cable _________________ My Photobucket for my Herbie Project - http://s1288.photobucket.com/user/TK-439/library/Herbie?sort=3&page=1

That’s a nice clean engine bay!
I don’t recall seeing Herbie’s engine all that much in the films except a glimpse when the bad guys always managed to somehow hotwired the car from the engine bay |

Not totally sure but I think your tarboard is backwards. I just stabbed the side panels in my beetle and the perforations and layout only worked right with the fabric side against the metal - it seems like a risk of getting sucked up in the fan with it facing out -? _________________ Robert in Memphis

Progress was frustrating to say the least
The windows are absolutely kicking my butt
I spent 8-10 hours yesterday and only got one in
The others fought me so I worked in something else
The ragtop
I forgot to take pics
But, I replaced the rollers and painted all of the mechanisms and hardware
It still needs smoothed and adjusted
As does the headliner itself
But at least they are both part of the car now and not in a box
And that is progress _________________ My Photobucket for my Herbie Project - http://s1288.photobucket.com/user/TK-439/library/Herbie?sort=3&page=1

Parts came in the mail today so I took the old wiper motor and refurbed it
It’s the one in the middle
I disassembled it , cleaned it up, and repainted it
Then I wanted to replace the 6v armature with a 12v
Pop off the spring for the brushes
Then remove the two screws and lay the brush assembly aside
Then simply pull the armature out
A side by side with the new in the left
I gutta be honest and say I can’t see much of a difference
Anyway
Reassemble in reverse order and don’t forget the spring
Put the cover back in and pop the clip into place
(Yes I polished the cover lol)
Reassemble the linkage and make sure you have new rubber grommets
And don’t forget this spring either
And here’s a before and after

Very nice work! I don’t ever remember seeing any of the Herbie movie’s, I’ll have to do some research. |

Today the rain came , so my windows and seals were put on the back burner
I finished the plumbing on the breather box
The valve covers have fittings installed and I drilled two holes in the engine tin to route them through
I forgot to get pics of the tin, but rest assured that I installed grommets too
I then moved to the front of the car and fought the steering column a bunch by putting it together wrong
I finally figured it out and ending up with my old beat up wheel installed for now
I’ll replace it later with the correct one with the D-ring for the horn .
My wife came out to see my progress
And said “oooh that’s cool. I like how it has the Wolfsburg logo”
I added rubber padding on the bottom of the tank and installed that
Ignore the ugly rusted bolts . The new shiny ones I bought were the wrong pitch lol
Then I pulled it back out to do wiring (idiot)
I got some of it done for now
I don’t wanna do the radio and wiper until the windshield is in
Hopefully tomorrow will be sunny so I can heat up the seals and try the glass again _________________ My Photobucket for my Herbie Project - http://s1288.photobucket.com/user/TK-439/library/Herbie?sort=3&page=1

The progress on your car is really looking great.
I wonder if the tar board in the engine compartment is installed correctly.
To me, it appears that the fabric near the hooks is a little loose or not tightly adhered to the tar board.
The WW tar board that I installed in my 67 doesn't have the loose fabric appearance. _________________ I have learned over the years.

Yeah , it is
Someone else pointed it out several posts back.
I’ll replace it later with the waffle style
But for now I’m gonna keep moving forward
Thanks for the compliments _________________ My Photobucket for my Herbie Project - http://s1288.photobucket.com/user/TK-439/library/Herbie?sort=3&page=1
