This is for a '90 Westy.
Who rebuilds auto trannys and can provide a High Quality rebuild?
Anyone know who GoWesty uses?

Answer to both of your questions = GTA (German Transaxle of America) in Bend Oregon.

However, GW is trying to get to the point where they can do them in-house. Not sure if they are there yet.

When I had GTA rebuild mine last year I opted for their $800 additional "Turbo trans" upgrade which includes 4 gear planetary, larger direct reverse drum, extra clutch in forward and an RV stall converter, bronze bushings - (Audi stuff). Don't know if that is what you have in mind, but here's the cost break down:

Rebuilt Auto Trans $1595.00
Turbo Upgrade 800.00 (optional)
Core Deposit 750.00
FAS cooler kit 299.95 (optional and HIGHLY recommended)
Shipping (B to B) 335.38
--------------------------------------

Sub-Total $3780.33
ReturnedCore Deposit 750.00

Grand Total $3030.33

Additional things you may want to consider:

Peloquin TBD
R&P (Stock 4.09, 3.73, or 3.27 depending on your engine of choice)
New Axles (German)

If you are in Palo Alto, you have other local options to rebuild your auto tranny and save shipping costs.

Also, shipping cost from German Transaxle to Bay Area are more like $255 round trip business to business no lift gate on truck.

I would think GoWesty would have a hard time doing them in house without a ton of cores for hard parts. Without a transmission dyno it would also be hard to test them. I guess they could install a rebuilt one and road test it, but that is not very efficient.

Stephan's Auto Haus uses Porter's Precision up in El Dorado Hills. I had my manual rebuild by them and I'm almost positive they do automatics as well.

My B-to-B shipping (no lift gate) fee of $335 was from GTA (Bend,OR) to Sacramento, CA and included return shipping for the core.

Sounds good. The shipping quotation I posted above was given to me by GTA thru an email this week. Same conditions as you.

Thanks for all the replies.

I'm going to be passing through Bend, OR in a few months,
I will look into arranging a swap at their shop then keep heading north.

Madspaniard - Can you post your recommendations for options in the bay area? Thanks!
