FRONT BUCKET SEAT ID
First off I would like to thank everyone that contributed technical and visual information for this Post!
So seat covers should be listed as follows.
68-72
73-74 With holes for headrest. Can use 68-72 covers but have to cut holes for headrest.
75 One year only. Passenger seat fixed and open back. Can use 76-79 covers.
76-79
I will be discussing the two basic styles (shapes) of seats used in the 68-79 VW T2s. The 68-73 Style and the 77-79 Style.
These two styles of seats will fit in multiple years. So it is important that you identify what seats are in your vehicle!
Be aware that Special order or Custom order seat covers are not returnable. So make sure you are ordering the correct seat covers! If you have any doubt. Ship the old seat covers to the seat cover manufacturer. Or take the seats to an upholstery shop.
SEAT ID
68-73 Style (shape) Seats
Box shape bases and backs
Seat base cover attaches on the underside with a wire (or string) running through a hem
Passenger seat Open back
73-74 have headrest mounts
These seats can be found in 68-76 buses.
75-76 and some 74 Seats
Have the same shape as the 77-79 seats. But base cover Attaches on the underside with a plastic (or cardboard) strip that tucks into a Groove on the base plate.
Passenger seat has Open back like 68-73
These seats can be found in 74-79 buses.
77-79 Style (shape) Seats
Drivers and Passengers Seat is the same seat for 77-79
Bases narrow at the back
Backrests, shoulders narrow and get thinner at the top. Back is more concaved shaped
Base cover is Not Attached on the underside with a plastic (or cardboard) strip that tucks into a Groove on the base plate
These seats can be found in 76-79 buses
DRIVERS SEAT UPHOLSTERY
68-73 and some 74s, upholstery the same
75-76 and some 74s, upholstery material is wedged in between a groove on the bottom of the seat frame
77-79 drivers and passengers seat upholstery the same
PASSENGERS SEAT UPHOLSTERY
68-73 and some 74’s passengers seat upholstery the same. Seat fixed. No back material.
75-76 fixed passengers seat upholstery the same. No back material
76 passengers swivel seat. Drivers seat and upholstery used. Closed back
77-79 passengers and drivers seat upholstery the same
PLEATS(lines)
68-72 Regular seats Vertical pleats (lines)
73-79 Regular seats No pleats
73-79 Microbus and Deluxe seats Horizontal pleats
SEAT UPHOLSTERY ATTACHMENT
68-73 and some 74s Bottom material attached with a wire and tangs on the frame.
75-76 and some 74s. Seat cover material is wedged into a groove on the seat frame.
75-76 and some 74s. Fixed passengers seat cover attaches with tangs on the frame.
77 -79 ?????????????????????????????????????????(can’t find driving me crazy)
PADS
68-73 and some 74 Seat Pads the same
75-79 and some 74 Seat Pads the same
Note: this tag has the Seat Padding part number on it.
HEAD RESTRAINTS (headrest)
E73 headrests have a release button on them. (Karl)
73-E75 to chassis 215 2049 802 headrest have covers with zipper on the bottom. Tear drop shaped.
M75-79 from chassis 215 2019 803 headrest are solid foam. Square shaped.
Headrests are interchangeable. (Confirm which ones you have)
RECLINE MECHANISM
68-74 Driver seat has a round knob located on the lower front of the seat that is twisted to adjust the backrest recline.
75-79 recline lever moved to the right side hinge of the seat, where seat back attaches.
RECLINE RETURN SPRING
75 Drivers seat only, coil spring located in the center of the seat bottom.
76-79 torsion rod spring located in the hinge cross bar connecting pipe.
SLIDE RELEASE LEVER
68-E76 lever located on the front left hand side of the seat. With release lever #1
L76-79 lever changed with seat tracks, located on the front middle of the seat. With release Paddle #2
SWIVEL SEATS
76 Swivel seat became an option for passengers side only
E76only Swivel bracket had the 68-73 style seat Runners. With release Lever #1
L76 Swivel bracket changed to the 77-79 style seat Runners. With release Paddle #2
77 Drivers side swivel seat offered?
77-79 Swivel brackets the same driver and passenger side
E76 only swivel seat bracket
L76- 85 swivel seat bracket
GUIDE RAILS AND RUNNERS (If you have a 1976 this paragraph is a must read)
The seat Guide Rails attached to the seats. Ride on the seat Runners attached to the body.
I will refer to the assembly as Seat Tracks.
The Seat Tracks along with the Seat Release Mechanism changed Mid 76 or beginning 77. There is conflicting information concerning this change. Research was inconclusive related to this change.
For the purposes of this article, I will refer to the change in Seat Tracks as Early 76 (E76) and Late 76 (L76).
Members have stated the change took place mid 76.
Members have stated the change took place beginning 77.
Quote Mayor Ratwell:
(“The seat rails change mid-year in 1976 with VIN 2162 078 000 that allow you to use later model Vanagon seats.”)
This would mean that the first 78,000 1976 Busses received the Early Rails, and subsequent Buses received the Late Rails.

Stated in, VW Transporter and Microbus Specification Guide 1967-1979:
(“08.76, 2172 000 001 Rails of drivers seat changed; change to handle that releases mechanism to allow seat to slide") this is the beginning of the 77 production year.

Note: #5 & #6 Guide Rail changed chassis 2172 000 001. This would be the first 77 that rolled off the assembly line.
Pictured in, Sewfine Products 74-76 Seating Guide. Is the Late seat runners on the driver’s side with the Fixed seat mounting on the passenger side.
So which Seat Tracks do you have?
If you have these Seat Runners the 68-E76. You need a seat with #1 Slide Release Lever as depicted.
If you have these Seat Runners L76-85. You need a seat with #2 Slide Release Paddle as depicted.
Note: the inner rails are shorter than the outer rails.

I was wondering if the early seats have the same dimensions as the late split driver's seats. They look very similar with the same style of release knob. So would the earlier seats be applicable to maybe '64 to L76?

| Are you looking for the upholstery attachment for the 77-79? My 77 Westy has a groove that the fabric is wedged into for the bottom, and metal tangs for the seat back. The tangs are integrated into the frame on the bottom rear of the seat back. |

Hi! I'm trying to order new foam and vinyl for my front seats which were pulled from a 79? Riviera. They are installed now in my 71 bay. I'm curious if these are a stock VW seat, I've not seen this pattern on any other seats and I wanted to make sure I ordered the correct parts. I see they have the same paddle release but the vinyl seemed different.

Could you provide some pix of the seat tracks, backs and bottoms of both seats.
Do both seats have seat tracks or is the passenger seat fixed in position.

Seat tracks on drivers seat, fixed points on passenger. I installed the tracks on my 71 from the donor bus.

Looks like stock upholstery to me. I have the same Canyon Brown in my '79 Transporter.

I've got the 73-74 frames with headrest. Trouble is online places offer:
74-76 BusDepot, Jbugs, mamotorworks.com,
74-79 mamotorworks.com
75-76 Wolfsburg West
Does anyone know where I can get the right covers? Don't need headrest - they are in good shape.
