I have a 75 Bus with a 1600 dual port engine. It currently has a Weber Progressive carb and a 009 German distributor. I am not getting a good range of advancement. I have to fan the gas petal to get it to run at start-up. I t is sluggish when driving it around the block. I'm guessing the springs are worn or streched out. I plan to keep the Weber and replace with a VW vacuum distributor. What kind is best for this set up? The engine is a low mileage recent rebuild. I've done tune-up job...timing , valves, ect.

It probably needs stronger spark! Single center mount is not the best set-up for them. I would consider getting a much better distributor and coil. Perhaps the Pertronix Flame thrower set-up in that new Vacuum Advance Distributor your thinking of buying.

Sadly there's no distributor that fits in a VW engine that plays well with the vacuum signature of that Weber, it makes vacuum at idle, no VW carb does that. The 009 is pretty well the best choice for that combination.

That said, the symptoms you describe sound more like jetting and setup issues with the carb, in cooler weather preheating the intake air also helps a lttle bit.

Make sure you do a full tune up first. The carb is the last thing adjusted.
Centermount, progressive, 2BBl carb on Type IV doesn't suck

How to make a progressive work properly on a VW engine

Good Luck

I haven't done it on a Type 1 engine, but I would expect that disabling the power valve and jetting the carb a bit richer would work on a Type 1 just the same as it works on a Type 4. With the power valve operating the carb will tend to run lean coming off idle and then run overly rich at cruise, this is just not what you want. Note that most carbs used on these engine do not have power valves and at least one carb even uses a reverse power valve. The power valve mod is easy to do and easily reversible if it doesn't work.

Maybe you need to fix your 009 or replace it. Best to hook up a timing light and watch the advance while you crank the throttle. Might just need some lube or it has a broken spring.

So much this. The difference between a weber progressive out of the box and one that's been properly jetted/tuned for a bus is absolute night and day. They also need to be HOT, and run like crap if they aren't.
